Japan makes it seem like it.

If the internet was good I'd have no problem the crime rates are probably non existent, I'd live in the boonies no problem.
>>
Depends. Sometimes you get some really chill shit like NNB and Flying Witch's more sub-urban countryside.

And then you also get Kuma Miko which is literally filled with nothing but old people you don't understand.
>>
I lived in the sticks as a child. It was extremely dirty. Everyone just throws their trash everywhere, and no one is paid to clean it up. People don't give a fuck about cleanliness. Squat toilets are awful. The smell of animal shit permeates everywhere. Everyone who lived there were old fuckers. All my children my age leave to the city as soon as they can.
>>
>>143414402
I think the internet rate would be acceptable. Japan is pretty advanced in terms of wireless.
They country is (relatively) small and their population density is rather high.
>>
It's waay boring and getting shit is hard as fuck.

I mean yae you have small shops but imagine needing to buy a charger.

Now if Amazon delivers then it's already better but then you have to realize that small villages have around 1000 population.

75% of that wouldn't be around your age to we're down to 250. Half of that is the opposite sex so 125. Then half of that is not your type so we're down to around 63 people you can date. Now out of those 63 probably half will already be taken so 32.

Anw that was my 5 cents on it. Anime makes it seem better than it really is.

>>
>>143414326
Well there would be elephants trashing your plants, wild animals stealing your fruits, baboons and assorted monkeys trashing your laundry, tons of fertilizer smell, wild hogs ruining your garden, annoying insects everywhere, keeping a stick under your bed to smack snake infiltrators, armed chink poachers looking for endangered animals to be turned into soup, black magic and patrolling headless IJA ghost.
If the sea is nearby some pirates might jack your boat and take all your fish and engines and worst that could happen is probably a marauding pirate army.
>>
>>143414714
Don't forget that if it's the mountain then you get mountain bandits, bears and the occasional yeti.
>>
>>143414714

>elephants and baboons
>in japan

to answer your question OP, the big advantage that rural life in japan has over, say, the USA, is advanced public transportation

rural americans don't have anywhere near the access to rail that the NNB girls do, making a day trip to the beach far easier and cheaper
>>
>>143414806
There are wild monkeys in Japan, but they're extremely rare and avoid humans. Elephants, not so much.
>>
>>143414326
I have family who lives in the middle of nowhere in texas. Im talking 15 minute drive to the nearest store, community mailboxes and trashcans, middle and highschools are combined. It's pretty much the same but NNB doesnt put much emphases on really needing a car and everyone doesnt have an ar-15

No mountain bandits or yetis here, closest you get is gommie gorillas hiding in their tunnel base who cross borders for potshot, bombing and kidnapping but then we gave them pardon, free clay, tax breaks, free food and everyone turned into farmers and rubber tappers.
Well there's also illegal loggers but they don't exactly shoot people on sight to avoid police or military action although some naive western activist might end up with a horrible fate.
A decade or two ago occasionally someone get nommed by tigers but then PRC got rich, demands surged and the tigers end up as soup and cock enhancing pills. Still puzzles me how a supposedly gommie govt results in silly superstition such as tiger pills, pangolin embryo soups and whatnot.

Let me tell you a story from personal experience

this one ain't gonna be pretty, you've been warned

Back in 2002 I somehow managed to go to Japan through a school exchange, they came here in the summer and we went there in March/April

The city was 2-3h north of Hiroshima, probably the biggest one in its local area but still pretty damn small and the people were nice. My host family lived in a tiny ass town some 20 minutes by car away or so, that was also nice.

Then came the marathon thing. I thought it would be fun to sign up for it, to experience the japanese countryside from a perspective you don't usually get, and of course I was not prepared. Not prepared at all. In fact, my body had timed its pooping so that mid-marathon my ass would go "There's a big brown snake knocking, you better get going".

Once the ordeal was over I was desperately looking for a public toilet, any form of public toilet. I knew the city office had a nice one, one of those with a gazillion buttons that can sprinkle water on your ass and what not. The city office was closed bcause of the marathon.

The only public toilet available was a squat toilet in a tiny shack and there was no TP available. In fact, it was slab dab in the middle of the city and I could hear all sorts of people rummaging about outside as I took a giant ass shit inside while my knees, exhausted from the marathon, were wobbly.

And there was no toilet paper.
>>
>>143415605
Hope you just wiped with your underwear and just left them in the shack. Regardless, great post, would subscribe.
>>
>>143415698
I won't say what I did but it wasn't pretty.

Other happenings included "Taking a train to the next prefecture to visit an actual city" "Finding a bookstore in said city and buying doujinshi tankôbon despite me being 17 years old", "Finding out the tankôbon were half-full of Doremi stuff that was not indicated on the cover", "Drinking a table of japanese dads under the table" and "Ticklefight with a schoolgirl that lead to some mild molestation".

At this point I should probably mention that all the other German students disliked me. This had its upsides, as it meant I got to have my own room in the ryokan and thus could indulge in the mysterious lands of Japanese TV at night. I saw Digimon Tamers, One Piece and some weird game show with old men dressed up as hamsters trying to recite the correct order of three colors, fucking up and laughing hard.

Also highly irritating sing-and-dance stuff aimed at 3 year olds.

Because it was 2002, nobody had Internet - during a trip to a coastal city one hour north and a short stay in the lobby of a hotel on the beach I noticed some kinda telephone that noted it had ISDN so I tried to surf the web or at least send an eMail home.

Turns out it couldn't do either and I should've just asked someone to lent me an imode cellphone.

I am living in the farmland right now.
There's really nothing to find around here and if ever your computer broke down, you will need to travel kilometers just to get it fixed.
But boy do I love it here. Everyone here is helpful, everyday is peaceful, and vegetables, meat, and fisheries are all cheap and fresh.

I once tried to live in the city to get some cash but I quit after just 3 months because I really am not a city dweller.

Pic related. My place is just like that. Nothing but rice paddies for miles and beaches at the other side of the road
>>
Everything looks very old and dirty. People are friendly, but mostly are old. Communal trash piles here and there. Lot of fires for burning trash and ___ on fields (no idea what that is about). A dozen kids congregating at the convenience store that sells everything (only store in the area). Lots of chickens. Lot of cheaply made looking constructions, almost like shanties, that serve as storage or chicken coops or whatever. Old people all congregating around benches or randomly placed concrete slab playing mahjong. No idea where people who are not brats or elderly are. You know they exist, but they are nowhere to be seen.

Lived my teenage years in an area with such small towns that our high school encompassed 2 counties, and everyone from 3 different towns had to come to my town to go to school, and we still only had 18 people in my graduating class.
It's pretty similar to the kind of sticks depicted in anime. There's nothing to do, so you and your friends just go wandering around and getting in trouble out of boredom. The main thing everyone did in high school was to go "ridin'", which meant that you literally just piled up in a car and drove up and down Main Street over and over, and if it was a good day, someone had a bottle of vodka.
Come to think of it, that's probably why I'm a weaboo. Stayed shut up in my room watching anime because I didn't want to do that shit every day.
>>
>>143414326
My 'sticks' are like that except the houses would be scattered within the forest area and have lots of privacy and that whole farm area would have like 1 or 2 houses in it. And barns. And cows. And no mountains.

That entirely depends on what country/community you end up being plopped out into. I was lucky enough to be born in rural southern Sweden, and the village I grew up in was pretty damn comfy. The people were nice, and nature being a constant presence was really soothing. However I was really out of touch with the community and never really had any friends when I was a kid, I suppose that's the reason why I came to grow tired of and leave the sticks.
And now that SJW's are running rampant here in Sweden I'm kind of tempted to move back as people there didn't really give a shit about politics, but I'd probably once again end up not having any friends, even more so since I become a weeb.

How easy is it to marry a country hick?
>>
I live in a farming town of about 500 people in the countryside. I moved here from the city for work.

It's visually beautiful. We have a very nice town in a valley and it's nice and scenic. In the springtime you can smell lilacs when you go outside.

There's a lot of truth in NNB, like the mixed age classrooms causing kids to befriend outside of their ages, and parents being less protective of their kids and pretty much just letting them roam free and do whatever they want. Younger kids are also kind of sheltered and not as socialized, so they often have poorer communication skills, like you see with Renge. A lot of people chock this up to "autism" but I know it's just the difference between country and city kids. Renge is a very realistic "country kid." The episode with her and Honoka has a lot of truth, you notice how Honoka is very talkative and formal, wears a dress, etc, whereas Renge is a lot more quiet and shy, less willing to vocalize her desires. There's this one part where Honoka notices that Renge is jealous of her camera and offers to let her use it, I think that hits the nail on the head.

But yes, the country life is nice. Some people find it "boring," but since we have an internet connection and I own a computer, I never get bored out here. It's quiet and peaceful, people leave their homes and cars unlocked, literally everyone knows you. I think the only thing I don't like about it is that you don't get the same kind of privacy or anonymity you do in a big city. You can't just blend in.

I would guess it depends.
But as a child, I can't imagine the sticks really being that different from the suburbs. The only differences being that you have more chances of getting a social life if the group kicks you out, and more organized afterschool activities. There are still just a few people you generally spend time with, and you can still do a lot of the same stuff suburb or sticks. When you get older the suburbs may have more to offer though.
But I would bet that realistically, everyone would just spend their time inside watching TV or playing video games. You would have to be lucky to end up with people who actually want to do stuff, most people, no matter where they live, will rather just sit inside watching TV.

In NNB, the boy has been rejected entry to the social group of his age, and because he lives in the sticks, he has nowhere to go, and has to spend all the time alone. If he lived a place with more people, he'd have more chances at finding other social groups that didn't reject him.

He have a lawn and bushes and trees around our houses, big enough for stuff that's not very space demanding. There are forested areas within walking distance and places to swim. The countryside I lived in was an island. The only way to get there is a bridge that connects to the main road. This takes about 3 hours to go from the nearest city to our island. But the fun part is you have to go to 3 different mountain, composing a series of uphills and downhills. And since that road was only build just to connect our island to the city, there are rarely vehicles on the road. My greatest dream is to buy a Subaru and fill that road some skid marks.
Also eurobeat.

I used to live in a town of 300 people. I was a kid so I just ran around with my friends in the empty lots, went biking. If you don't get along with the other kids around your age you have nothing to do so you make it work. Everyone knew what you were doing every day, gossip is a major pastime for the adults. A lot of things, even shopping is a major chore. We only had 1 store for a thirty mile radius.

I only lived there for 2 years after my mother's divorce and I've actually never been back although I still live about 5 minutes from someone I met there. So my knowledge of sticks life isn't so high.

depends, in my town it is rather comfy to live. Fast internet, friendly people that would invite anyone to fucking dinner. And mostly it's just the good temperature.

But unless your a guy that hates sitting around basking in the sun being comfy then the sticks isn't for you.

Its gonna bore you to hell and would piss you off if you lived in a city before due to the lack of things you can buy.

But for it is rather good, since I get to sit around, sell some of the goods from my shop to the tourist, sit comfortably and browse /a/ from time to time.

It is. Beautiful scenery, peaceful, people aren't crammed together, little traffic. Has all the essentials you need, and you can get everything else from Amazon. As long as you get decent internet, rural is far better than the city. Living expenses and crime are far lower too, and there is better racial and cultural homogeneity and thus aore haonious community. Frankly the city is for fools that have to work there or are deluded into thinking their life their is somehow more important just because the name is bigger on a map.

Its not that bad anymore, gommie terrorists were exiled, black magic practitioners are pretty much gone, the elephants and tigers were moved to national parks and as a result poachers moved on but recently with the discovery of thousands year old city ruins in the jungle we get some sort of cult wearing white trying to break into excavation areas to steal artifacts from the temple. Even piracy evolved since new patrol boats ,UAVs and radars hinder Somali style piracy they now have degrees and diplomas to join shipping companies using forged identity before poisoning the crew, moving the ship beyond navy patrol areas and stealing everything.
Some bizzare stuff still goes down in other region though for example a pirate invasion a few years back and by invasion I mean hundreds of armed men.

As someone who has lived in both, the city is much better. Rural life is pretty nice every now and then, for a few weeks or maybe months at a time, but the seclusion will drive you insane and it is extremely inconvenient having to drive an hour just to get pizza or some coffee and donuts or whatever, it makes you want to just stay inside all day because everything is so fucking far away.

It's not only the food that is a problem though, everything you need is at least an hour away by car, and you'd better hope you can get a job in town or you're going to be driving even longer than that every day. Want to hang out with friends? Better rev up that gas bill. Want to go drink? The only bar is an hour away and you're going to have to sleep in town unless you want to fucking die driving drunk down pitch black country roads full of wildlife.

I have lived in a lot of different places and small town/semi-rural is best. You get little courts of houses mixed among small farms, wide open spaces mixed with some pockets of woods here and there, the town and basic shopping is only a five minute drive away but can be biked easily as well, you typically still get decent internet and some really nice skies. Cost of living is also pretty cheap and if you have a well pump you don't pay for plumbing.
>>
>>143414326
Take this but add another mile of forest and farmland between each house and major area and you have the right idea for american rural areas.
>>
The worst part about living in a moderately to heavily forested rural area is that spooky shit happens all the god damn time.
It's nice when you can sit on the porch and nap, then get up and take your dog for a walk and everyone says hi because everyone knows everyone, but then you're up at 2 in the morning one night because your dog is going batshit fucking crazy and you hear noises that don't belong to any animal that lives in the area and find out an eviscerated raccoon was thrown at your front door when you leave for work in the morning.

I remember one time, I was about 13 years old, I was in the basement at about 10pm or 11pm and noticed there was a coyote watching me through a basement window, I could see its face and front legs. It really gave me a fucking fright, I ran up the stairs like a madman. Coyotes seem to be the number one cause of all the stupid spooky shit I experienced when I lived up north. Animal carcasses, crazy noises at night, scratch marks on doors, all from fucking coyotes, the bastards loved hanging out around our house at night.

The ever-present danger of spontaneous bear attack is pretty shitty too, I'd always carry a hunting knife with me when I went in the woods just in case. It always feels like something is watching you.

Another home in the suburbs
>>
Growing up in the countryside is fucking awesome because boundaries are completely different and practically the whole world is your playground, plus there's basically an entire population of other kids of varying ages all occupying the same big, wide world and you all constantly bump into one another, form impromptu groups, hang out and all sorts of stuff.

As you get older and the world loses that luster of mystery and newness, it stops being so grand. As a teenager, the lack of good places to hang out or things to do wears pretty thin, and as an adult there's not much of a difference between city and country life beyond the fact that there's fewer people to deal with, more work to keep your property maintained, and fewer luxuries.

I feel sorry for kids that are stuck growing up in cities or, even worse, in those sterile nursery suburbs that constitute the existential nightmares of salarymen and middle-aged housewives than done caught the feminism.

Not everywhere is like where you live. I could hold my tongue but I had an exaggerated sense of how relevant my own experience was growing up like that, in the country so to speak. Disillusion the audience by shattering the countryside dream with a dickwad MC, inevitably garner sympathy for the guy because of all the shit he has to go through, introduce the shy girl to make people expect that he's finally getting a break, and then finally break those dreams again when the viewers realize the MC is still the same old isolationist asshole from when the series started.

Shit's beautiful. Like an antithesis to all those countryside SoLs, even more so than Kuma Miko.
