Honestly, if he showed his support to Emilia without relying on saying he was her knight things would have probably worked out better. Knights are clearly prideful and hard workers, so they got angry at him for his lax attitude towards the title, and the back and forth between him and Julius.
The council members even mentions that now that everyone saw how far he was willing to go for her everyone could see that she's not to be feared for her appearance.
