What's the best sports anime and why is it Haikyuu!!?

Having actual animation for a show like this is the cherry on top. Matches are actually exciting to watch becasue they're not some powerpoint slideshow with few frames for the "important parts".

Slam Dunk is probably my favorite, Cross Game and Hajime no Ippo are runners-up.
My problem with sports shows is that the premise is generally the same for all of them (except in infrequent cases). You have rag tag guys trying to beat the odds to become the best, while in the meantime learning the value of teamwork and friendship. There are probably 100+ shows like this. The distinguishing factor is the context of the sport and what happens outside the area to make us care (which is much more difficult to find).
