They kinda took everything wrong with the first game and just straight up improved on all the points. It's feels rare that such a think actually happens.

I think that DR1 had a better overall atmosphere and the story was tighter, though the combination of the MC just watching certain other characters do everything for him + the mysteries being patronisingly obvious sorta killed it.
DR2 sorta embraced the series' inherant zaniness more, which some people would like whereas others wouldn't I suppose. The mysteries were more elaborate and complicated, sometimes a little too nutty for it's good but arguably it was all within the confines of the plot and setting. Cast was better I feel (with much better FTEs overall) but it did this weird thing of having a couple characters in there act mainly as accessories to the development/characterization of other cast members and little else (Peko to Fuyuhiko, Hiyoko to Mikan) whereas in DR1 everyone atleast felt like they could stand on their own as a character.

I enjoy the games for what they are. Hell, the second game is pretty damn good since it goes even further in the madness that the first one begun. The spin-off was on the easyside and the story was also weak but I liked it whenever Komaru and Fukuwa were shown

Greatest side note in the series, that was my exact though when I got to the biology room in DR1. I know they were necessary for the plot, but it's very unsettling to think the bodies of the people you were chatting up in the game earlier were just a few feet away from you on ice.

When Another Episode came out in Japan I created a habit of avoiding DR threads as to not be spoiled and it's been almost a year since I played it and I still instinctively avoid DR threads for no reason

kodaka really knows how to spread the despair, I got lucky and played the series a couple months before DRAE came out. Though the worst part about liking DR is that it's so closely related to ZE. I've encountered a few anons thinking they're being funny by posting spoilers for ZE in DR threads and vice versa. That's the worst part about 4chan is you'll get spoiled for a game completely unrelated to the topic at hand.

That chapter in general is the weakest of all the games. Her motive was forced onto her because of the despair disease. Admittedly it was cool to see the contrast between their untainted selves and their despair selves. But breaking her character just for that chapter was bullshit and then convienently removing the virus for the next one was aggravating.

The despair disease was a (pretty dumb) red herring to distract the player from what was actually going on. Mikan getting her memories back was an unintended glitch.
The thing that bothered me about it was Hiyoko's involvement in the incident. Aside from wanting to mirror DR1's 3rd case's multiple victims there was no decent reason given for it to even happen and even during the trial it felt like an afterthought.
