Compared to Zero's designs, the designs are pretty shit. The eyes are weird too, they're smaller and set back further into the face which only makes the noses of all the characters look bigger, especially the female ones.
Do you see the way the right eye behind Saber's nose is noticeable in this shot? As well as the small impression near the lips? That's missing from a lot of side-on shots of characters in UBW.

Yep, you'll be going through the same maps over and over again. There are a couple new areas/dungeons but they are far and few and you'll have to go through a couple of them a few times as well.
No one really gets much screentime outside of their episodes and occasionally in other characters episodes, but in my opinion Elize is probably the only Xillia 1 character I liked better in the first game.

Vesperia's problem is that it wanted to be several things at once. The first part of the game is pretty strong, and it seemed like it was going to be about a bunch of outlaws upsetting the government. Then it changed directions part of the way through the game and made it more about an ancient civilization that let the world get destroyed, then became some kind of generic typical tales plot about saving the environment, without really fleshing out the characters that much. I mean most tales games do the whole bait and switch plot thing, but there wasn't even really a big twist when it changed it's focus, it just kinda changed it's focus.
It really didn't help that it kept on forcing in a lot of drama that didn't go anywhere. Such as Yuri being stabbed in the back and falling one hundred feet, only for him to shrug it off and be pretty much fine the next cutscene.

Since they're also trying to tie this story into Berseria in coming for the game's release, I'd imagine they'd be tweaking the game's overall lore at the very least. Which is still just one of many problems.
In my opinion, this game needs an complete redo, not just some half ass changes. For example, making Alisha stay in the party does nothing unless the execution is perfect. She'll need something to do and she'd likely just get owned if she's not a squire. Effectively, Rose does everything she would've done anyway so it's pointless and I can't see them bothering when this entire anime is simply to hype Bears.

You're right, the characters were lack luster, and while there were some good ideas here and there, the game ultimately went with the most terrible ones. Alisha is a character who ultimately didn't fit in the party, and her exit was an inevitability. But opening up the game more I feel that a problem with her is that she shouldn't have been the only guest character, it would have been great to get Sergei for a while.
One of Zestiria's biggest problems is that it didn't try to endear you to the world, it didn't really want the gamer to get too attached to anything, and in fact it pretty much tells you not to.
You shouldn't feel apathy when the MC's grandfather dies.
