I felt a bit iffy on Shun's development until I actually reflected on what happened during his NAKAMA flashbacks.
Lancers vs Obelisk Force- Shun learned that NAKAMA are those who're willing to pull his ass out of the fire at the expense of their own (which he paid them back for in the prison escape in spite of acting like he didn't care about them)
Battle of the Birdmen- Shun regained focus on his actual reason for fighting in the first place as a result of bonding with a like-minded individual
It was still definitely a bit wonky, but I think it did its job, particularly since it seemed the emotional core of that was about Shun trying to reach Kaito in any way he could, more than anything else.

Late reply BUT Johan was originally written to be a descendant of Julius Caesar. Caesar had collected seven rare gems to be used in a lithograph to signify his power as the dominant ruler of the ancient world, but the jewels were lost at sea. Johan plays a Crystal Beast deck, which is based on that legend and created by Pegasus, and he was supposed to assume the mantel of Caesar to challenge Judai's Supreme King, but because KENN wanted out early the script was hastily changed, and the plot was dropped.
