Toei included a scene referencing Gohan's training right before the Universe 6 tournament, and in his last appearance (in the Pan episode) he had the Ultimate Gohan look again.
IMO, even if Toriyama doesn't have much interest in him nowadays, we'll get an episode where Gohan shines for a bit. That said, you still will get plenty of tears because there's no way Gohan will actually be the main hero again or anything like that and some people won't accept anything less for their favorite character.

This might be the "gamble" AT3 Bulma spoke of, the machine used by OT future Cell to travel to AT2 might still have fuel for Trunks return trip to AT3.
Btw how old is Mai anyway? The fact the Dragon balls were used by the OT Pilaf gang the same year (age 767) the Androids appeared could explain why they weren’t used to wish the Z fighters back to life or to cure Goku's viral heart disease before it was too late (DB take a year to recharge); while in AT2 after being used to rejuvenate the Pilaf gang they were reactivated and upgraded by Dende (something that never happened in the OT) so they could eventually revive everyone killed by Cell with the very plot-convenient side effect of becoming available for use in less than one year time for once.
That way, assuming she is the same biological age as Trunks (born in age 766), Mai would have been turned into a 1 year old, meaning they are both about to turn 14 by now (age 780) if they haven't do so already. But here’s the catch: if Mai was telling the truth when inquired about her age in Battle of Gods (chronologically 41 years old at age 778) that would make her biologically one year older than what she was when first introduced in the series (age 749) which makes no fucking sense because she looked like an adult woman back then at only 12 years old!
