This will become a cult classic (at least for me).
I just watched for the 1st time "don't hug me i'm scared" and i thought at how it was trying to go for the "kids show that goes horribly wrong and terrifying" and how it fails by just making all so obvious and exaggerated during the second half, it just becomes silly. This on the other hand, tackles the SoL genre and midway through decides to become a somewhat subtle psychological horror, keeping the cute OP and ED, the nice colors and the joke-like mood, but centering all of it's content on the suffering of the little girl, be her panic attacks, social retardation or general stress put to her, but it keeps the silly mood until the bloody that anyone can easily see it's not cute at all, it's depressing and makes you feel awful, but the show still thinks it's SoL hijinks, it's amazing in a way, since it does the "show that goes horribly wrong and takes a dark turn" so much better.
Don't get me wrong, as a SoL, it's terrible, and everyone should be ashamed, but as "dark twist" show, it does better than Madoka or any "cute girls suffering" show of recent years.

It didn't really matter how it was written, the guy writing the anime-original script was complete trash and it would have been hated even if the actual events of the story were different. Case and point: Anime-original commercial episode was nothing like the ending, but was still noticeably worse and badly-received compared to the faithful ones.
The ending's problem is simple: The writing was fucking shit. Natsu getting driven to the city was retarded and cliche. Yoshio and Hibiki getting in an argument while Machi just happens to be listening was cliche. The Natsu drama was about nothing of substance whatsoever. There were so many things critically wrong with the ending's writing that frankly, anyone that thinks it was just "hurr durr Machi got a bad end" is mentally handicapped.
