I liked Black Swordsman arc because it really shows how much Guts alienated himself. It's good because it shows how screwed up Guts was. If the entire series was like that without Guts having character development, it would get boring really fast. But at least it would still have good art.
To be honest I like all of Berserk, even the boat arc's pacing is fine now that were off it, and not having to wait literal years to get off it.
It just pisses me off to no end how people try to say Berserk is now "moeshit" or "shonenshit" because it has particular characters they don't like and it's not being grimdark 24/7 all over again.

To me the best thing about Black Swordsman arc is that it hooks you in and makes you want to read more, even if it wasn't the most well written. Also the Guardians of Desire chapter, introducing Griffith and showing his relationship with Guts was vital in making the Golden Age 10x better and giving weight and anticipation to the eclipse. Otherwise it's too much a product of it's time and feels like a lot of generic 80s esque manga with a grimdark antihero (I mean the fucking first page is practically retconned by a lot of fans).
Lost Children showed Guts as a grim dark anti hero with much more nuance and sophistication than his BS counterpart adding that Beast Of Darkness to his psyche really added to his character. He also didn't feel as over the top edgy (even when he would do shit like eat the children's Guts) but you felt pure rage in him. I guess seeing the fight from Rosine's perspective makes him look mare savage. His moment where he tells Jill to find her way was also MUCH better than his edgy kill yourself speech to Teresa.
I still like Berserk a lot, and I do think there's some interesting developments ahead. Just this hiatus kind of kills the series for a number of reasons, (Casca probably won't get a satisfying resolution cause of it, it'd either be rushed or handwaved, and I doubt Miura wants to spend a bunch of time showing her recover with the current pace of the series).

But yeah, even in those early volumes, you can see glimmers that Guts puts on that dickish, misanthropic attitude because he doesn't want innocent bystanders to get killed by being near him. Hence why he tried to scare off the priest and his daughter, him immobilizing when that girl's possessed corpse was coming to him. And that look of sadness on his face when the Counts daughter swore she would kill him her for ruining her life.
So even from the beginning, Miura already had Gut's character solidified I think. I think the only time he was arguably out of character was how blase he was about Koka Village getting sacked.
