So my 3x3 has all artistic (whatever that means) anime on it?

Honestly if you haven't seen the anime then just hold off your judgement. This should also apply to most things in your life, so you've got a lot of work ahead of you.

I'm so used to the artistic wank that i thought for sure NGE would be one of the +'s for sure. Kinda glad that it was JJL and berserk that positive rankings, over the other three, at least.

As much as I like FLCL it's mostly on for nostalgic value, and I feel that aspect was sort of clouding my judgement when I made the list. It's the only one that i'm considering actually replacing.

How to spot a retard. You could at least watch them before deciding they have no merit outside of pretentiously being "artistic" for the sake of it and not even trying to piece together why they might like those shorts.

>>143167769
>I'm so used to the artistic wank that i thought for sure NGE would be one of the +'s for sure.
Why are you throwing one of your own supposed favorites under the bus?
>>
>>143167894
>Why are you throwing one of your own supposed favorites under the bus.

Except I'm not. I'm just saying I expected that kind of reaction with the community around here, and I'm just used to people +ing it on that merit alone. I genuinely like the show as one of my favorites for what it is. A pretty good deconstruction of the mecha genre. I like all of the shit involving the characters breaking down, whenever the action was good, seeing the charters interact and shooting the shit when the world isn't in danger. I'm just used to people liking it only for the 2deep 4you stuff, and all of the advant garde stuff near the end.
>>
>>143168012
>deconstruction of the mecha genre
How is it a deconstruction?
>>
>>143168058
>>143168012
Where the hell does this meaning of 'deconstruction' even come from? I've understood it as something entirely unrelated prior to all the Madoka memes (see Derrida).
>>
>>143168058
More so in the fact that it actually dealt with the pilots actually getting PSTD due to fighting the giant monsters they were up against. Granted things like it existed before, but very few series actually tackled the super robot Genre like that at the time. So it was a bit of something going against the norm. Maybe saying a deconstruction of the mecha genre is pretty broad, since we had some pretty bleak mechs in general years before it came out. (Original Gundam being a pretty big inspiration at that).

But the fact still stands it did a pretty good job at doing something most super robot shows hadn't really taken a stab at before. (Key word being most.) Granted the series flubbed a few times, low animation budget animation near the end, the Kawrou episode in trying to introduce a plot relevant character in the literal last actual episode of the series with a coherent plot, and a few bits of the series haven't aged well. But honestly I enjoyed the whole ride and it's one of the few series I can watch all the way through. And it was nice seeing Shinji realizing how much of a little shit he's been during the end of Evangelion.
>>
>>143168144
I think deconstruction is meant to be "Goes against the ordinary and does something unexpected with the genre it's working with." Most commonly playing these tropes in a more realistic light, or turning them on their head. Honestly at this point nobody gives a shit of what a proper deconstruction is. Madoka's a shit show anyway.
>>
>>143168282
I understand what this new meaning is supposed to be. I'm asking about where it came from. Did it just kind of appear unrelated to Derrida's philosophy?
>>
>>143168231
The super robot genre is pretty broad and diverse, Ideon and Getter Robo had the same elements you just mentioned. The Kaworu element is also pretty similar to something in Devilman, but neither are really deconstructive in any way of the robot genre or of any genre at all. Hell in general, Eva is pretty tame in comparison to lots of Go Nagai works which were an inspiratio on him. I mean Though I don't think there's anything bad about that in the first place.
>>
>>143168336
I think so. As opposed to the classical meaning, people just sort of took that word and used it in terms of the new definition. It's been around since long before Madoka came into being, I believe. I don't think half of the people who started using the term "deconstruction" knew much about the term's original definition.
>>
>>143168398
It's been around at least since the 80s, Watchmen used to be called a deconstruction as well.
>>
>>143168511
Do you know any academics or critics that used it in this context? And is it related to Derrida's philosophy? I mean it's related to postmodernism so it's not like that meaning is really old anyway.
>>
>>143168358
I'll admit a lot of the actual classics are a lot bleaker than Eva in terms of content. And in general, while I love the show, I kind of wish the Kawrou element could have been much better handled in general than in the final product. An interesting character concept who's entire character was wasted on mostly interacting with Shinji.

I don't mind a lot of the inspirations Eva took after some other works. Maybe Eva wasn't that much of a deconstruction as people make it out to be, but I feel that something like I think the main reason really exploded into infamy was mostly due to the time period it came out in. I mean granted pretty violent shit was coming out during those times, but you were still getting a lot of pretty upbeat shows coming out at the time. And I still think it does a lot of unique stuff, despite being derivative. I just think it's merits go beyond "being artsy and deep".

I'm pretty sure there were also a few things branded as deconstructions before watchmen came out too.

I kind of find it funny, honestly. Because like the Evangelion/Getter robo example mentioned before, the golden age of comics were also kind of dark and bleak in their own rights.
>>
>>143168678
>rating someone that doesn't rate
>>
>>143168597
I don't disagree with the other stuff, you don't have to defend it in those other categories. In fact I consider Eva to be my favorite anime and EoE to be easily my favorite animated movie. But I've also watched and read several older anime and I just found out how senseless the claim of Eva being a deconstruction is. I mean yeah, the direction was pretty unique especially the fast-paced, frantic cutting we see during some of the more introspective moments. But you can't really call that a deconstruction, since it wasn't really a popular method anywhere in mainstream productions.

I just think the deconstruction thing is misleading and it kindof devalues the other aspects of it. Eva was also really good at the pretty standard stuff like chararacterization, plot building (and it's puzzle like structure), animation quality, visual direction, composition and had some good design work without being overly complex like what you had in typical late 80s and 90s OVAs. It allowed for more more animation in the show itself and provided on point information about the characters, mecha and angels.
>>
>>143168679
Yeah, though I'd still say with Watchmen it kind of fits, since it did seem to be a bit intentional. I mean we have heroes to be shows as pretty deranged psychopaths and war criminals and the whole ending is based on saving the world through a lie. I don't think Anno intended anything like that. He more just wanted to express his personal doubts and frustrations and built a setting around it that took from all of his aesthetic preferences. So basically what artists have done since narrative fiction has became a thing.
>>
>>143168889
That's actually a fair enough point on the deconstruction element. If you call evangelion a deconstruction going into it, it kind of creates a predetermined image of what the series is going to be like. Which more often than not might lead people with the completely wrong mindset.

I like how you brought up that it doesn't make it's world over complicated. I feel like that's something people don't talk enough about Eva. Yeah there's little bits of world building, and exposition, but despite all of that it really helps make this post apocalyptic world still feel like it's our world, as opposed to some alien strange scifi world. The future still being wrought with 90's culture non withstanding (Although I guess it would make sense in context of that universe since they just finished rebuilding.)

I think that it is complicated in terms of its plot and setting, but that's more because of how its structured. It really does hold off exposition and it often provides elements which can be only understood based on knowledge you gain later. The events themself are pretty odd and I'm not suprised many people are baffled by them, I mean I was as well. Plus I do just plain like the setting, even if someone described it to me plainly I still think it would be pretty cool. You have two ancient beings that spawned both life on earth with humans and a seperate race of abstract species, who came to earth from gigantic capsules 4 billion years ago. On top of that their merging creates an entity that has the power to change the nature of humanity and can traverse time. You've got mecha which are gigantic beings birthed from these two original beings and incasted in armor to control them fueled by the souls of dead mothers of the pilots who control them. You've got some kind of weird world-controling sect of of kabala obsessed illuminati who work behind th scenes and a layered conspiracy.

I mean however presented it is still a pretty cool fuckin setting on its own.

And of course you can't deny the complexity of the characters, lots of it not just in their psychological depth but also in the ways these characters psyches are presented. We have the first layer of the way these characters seem on the surface, the second of how they act in harsh situations and the third in how their hidden traumas are revealed in moments of visualized introspection.

And that's pretty fuckin cool as well if I might add.

P.S. I'm still mad at you for what you said about my OP pic.

This has to be one of the shittiest mosiacs I've seen posted in these threads. Only 1.5 of 7 mosiacs are anime and manga related, which you couldn't even fill the second with manga and threw garbage like Scott Pilgrim on there, and you have some tumblr looking character mirrored on both sides and 9 different backgrounds swapped around to make it look gaudy as fuck. The images chosen for whatever film/series you chose don't look great either, but it's noticeably worse with that disgusting background.

8/8 for anime, but fuck man.

Not sure if you remember me, we talked in a thread once, I could recognize "Y the last Man" and "Watchman" from your comics mosaic, I also told you to make a normal image version, glad you did it, it's so much better aesthetically.
Since we talked, I saw "The Maxx", it's unique, but I wouldn't consider it one of my favorites because I feel a lot was omitted, 2/3rds from the comic aren't adapted. I also read "I kill Giants" yesterday, it was amazing, probably going to be on my next next 3x3. I plan on making a similar compilation of mosaics like you, but in January of 2017. If you haven't read it yet, check out Jodorowsky's "Incal", good stuff. If you're in the mood for some noir stuff, check out "Blacksad", "Leo Pulp" is good too, but I'm not too sure if an english translation exists.
