I loved it when I first watched it, but when I rewatched it I just couldn't stand it. I can understand it being polarizing, when I did first watch it, it was one of my first anime and the story was all new for me so I focused on that.

I think that mushishi being called adventure and mystery are apt, but because the adventures and mysteries are involved in such a domestic, small scale, way it makes people think it's slice of life. Not that the two can't be mixed, Hyouka obviously does, but calling it a "slice of life" makes no sense on the simple fact that the events in any episode are not a typical slice of anyone's life except Ginko's. That's like saying an anime about cute Vietnam deployed soldiers doing cute vietnam things (and by cute I mean horrific) is a slice of life just because they do it everyday. The people involved in the scenarios of Mushishi have an issue to solve because this isn't their normal life, and therefore it's not a slice of life. No, a slice of life is a slice of mundane life where whatever otherworldly elements involved (magic, alien life, futuristic tech, etc) doesn't serve as an antagonistic force.
Another example I'd give is Kino's Journey. Is that a slice of life? Mushishi and Kino have often been compared, having similar formats and tones but Kino is certainly the more action focused of the two. But that's maybe all that changes between the two, yet I think most people would be hard pressed to call it SoL, not because it's more grandiose or grim than Muhsishi, just that it seems so because it has more guns.
And although both may have SoL episodes that makes them no more a SoL anime than a SoL anime that digresses to some imaginary action sequence becomes an action adventure show.
Also MAL will call anything that has supernatural elements and female characters a "magical girl" show, so shows how broad and misplaced its categories can be.
