Drama induced by actual events happening on screen. For example, if at least one member of Mike's crew got hurt before this episode, Mike's break down now would feel more natural (in the sense of being a natural consequence of what came before in the show) and easier to relate to for the audience.

No I mean actually getting hurt. The Shiro thing was stupid since she went to rescue a cat and whatnot. There's no you could make the audience feel any sense of danger that way. And you can't make the audience get into Mike's fears if you can't even manage to make them feel any sense of danger.

In order for any drama not to feel "forced" you gotta make the audience feel invested in it.

>The show already makes you feel invested with the crew through all the SoL. It makes them feel like a real family.
It's an incredibly dull family where I can't tell apart 90% of the family members.
>>
>>143024900
>The show already makes you feel invested with the crew through all the SoL
I mean invested in the situation, in the danger they're going through.

Honestly, I don't feel any sense of danger in this show. And I'm not the only one there. The series just doesn't convey the stakes properly.
>>
>>143024578
>Mike's break down now would feel more natural
Mike break down makes sense if you remember that she said that no one got injured because of her luck. That's her problem more than people getting hurt on its own, it's the same doubts about her skills she had since the first episode.
>>
The only thing that I felt the show was lacking was the fact that they never even try to get the audience invested in Moka, so Mike spending the whole show after her just feels really tiring.
>>
Why did the blumers send 4 LCS against a BB on open water?
>>
>>143024970
That's just you, I felt that many were memorable. For example, episode 10 made Maron very likable.
>>
>>143025016
>she said that no one got injured because of her luck
Except that doesn't make sense because they didn't overcome just one situation. They got on top multiple times. If it's all luck, it's supernatural luck or something. Far from making Mike's fear relatable, that just makes the whole thing feel retarded.
>>
>>143025003
>. The series just doesn't convey the stakes properly.
Because there are no stakes here. There never were for fuck sake, them making big issues out of the rice cooker being broken and the lack of toilet paper was supposed to tell you exactly that. Everything in this show is done to not give you the point of view of the girls but of someone who is looking at them and thinks what's happening is silly/dumb.
>>
>>143025003
Just because you know they'll live doesn't mean there's no sense of danger. That's like saying capeshit movies have no sense of danger because you know the main characters aren't going to die.
>>
>>143025194
>Because there are no stakes here
I agree. Which is why Mike's fears feel forced.

>>
>>143025101
Why did they fire ASROCs against a BB? Why did they shoot it with the Bofors that somehow has a lower rate of fire than the Musashi main battery? We will never know.

>>143024970
I don't know what they were thinking. Most characters get no screentime whatsoever while others are just spouting the same one-liners every episode.
>>
>>143025162
Mike's lack of self-confidence makes her think it was all luck. There's also how the Musashi is in a totally different league compared to all the other ships they faced so far.
>>
>>143025247
No, in her world there is danger and everything is serious. We know she is wrong but she thinks that there is real danger of someone dying.

>>143025162
No, she is competent (and lucky), but she THINKS it's all down to luck. She's in a spiral of self loathing and fear that started when she had to give up on the Musashi the first time and got worse when Shiro almost drowned.
>>
>>143025210
>Just because you know they'll live doesn't mean there's no sense of danger.
Of course, but you can create plenty of sense of danger even if you know everyone's going to live. People actually getting hurt from time to time would help, for instance. Also, a bit of sol is okay, but the staff should be able to keep some sense of dread even during sol moments (look at Yuuki Yuuna beach episode for an example of this).

Execution plays a bit part here. It's not enough to tell the audience that something is dangerous. You've gotta make them feel it.
>>
>>143025247
Their lives are at stake in addition to the lives on the Musashi and the people on land in danger of being bombarded.

>>
>>143025426
>No, in her world there is danger and everything is serious. We know she is wrong but she thinks that there is real danger of someone dying.
That's a writing issue right there. It's not enough that Mike is afraid for her crew. You gotta make the audience fear for them too. Otherwise there's like a disconnect between what the characters feel and what the series actually convey, and it shouldn't be like that.
>>
>>143024578
>Drama induced by actual events happening on scree
Like fire command post (or whatever that was) being destroyed and its crew only surviving due to air bags, which probably wouldn't help in the slightest against direct hit from Musashi?
>>
>>143025480
>Their lives are at stake
That's what they say. That danger isn't properly conveyed so.
>>
>>143025453
People on the Harekaze got bruises and the ship took serious damage on episode 9. They should have put more serious wounds but people still have gotten hurt.
>>
>>143025630
After all they went through, that alone is too little too late.
>>
>>143025599
>Otherwise there's like a disconnect between what the characters feel and what the series actually convey, and it shouldn't be like that.
That's exactly what they wanted to do. They could have done 100 things to make us fear for them but instead they went out of their way to actually disconnect us from them.

If I have to guess what they wanted to achieve, it was the same thing GuP did (ie let you know nothing bad can happen to the girls) without taking the sports aspect. The only problem with this is that the anime went too fast and 12 episodes were not enough. I have no doubts they planned this to be a 24-26 episodes anime.

Not really. Remember, they are students who are not suppose to see actual combat and has yet to have their official training mission to get them accustomed to their ships. All things considered, this breakdown was a long time coming.

They are under-aged, under-prepared, under-powered, and under an obscene amount of pressure. I'll be more worried if they didn't have any sort of fear in them, especially since the enemy does not give a shit about killing other people.

That's only what you assume because nothing has happened yet (and isn't likely to happen either because we know the nature of the show). For the characters who are getting bombarded by the Musashi, though, I'm fairly sure that they know that getting hit would fuck their shit up and that's why Mike is afraid. Why should they assume that they're in a cute cartoon world where nobody dies?
We also know that Mike is famous for being lucky, she even stated that the only reason why nothing bad has happened to them yet is pure chance. God damn it edgefags please stop being angry because these girls aren't dying or because there wasn't any deep plot about conspiracies and mutinies and try to enjoy the show for the cute girls and occasional naval combat that it's worth.

>>
>>143028028
They're the great equalizing force for destroyers. If all Harekaze had was her 5-inchers, they'd be pretty much literally unable to do anything but knock out secondaries and kill people in the superstructure. Even with bulges, a torpedo is a credible threat to any vessel afloat.
>>
>>143027137
Not really. Most of our shipping is still done with ships. Airplanes are mostly used for fast interpersonal traveling and against enemies. I mean, looking over at the news, what else besides military and tourism, are airplanes being used for? Speaking of which, airplane for traveling isn't actually very profitable as it's only the guaranteed airmail from the government postal services that's keeping it afloat.

In this verse, with seemingly very little battles and the rise of coastal cities, airplanes just doesn't seem like a necessity.
>>
>>143028206
I've personally just figured that the alt-history of this whole thing is that people looked at airplanes and went 'I guess, that's safe enough to put bombs on but fuck putting humans on-board'. Like how airships basically died off.
>>
>>143028332
The alt-history is that there is probably no world wars, and since they had somehow started methane gas mining so damn early, airplanes had probably took a back seat to ships and blimps due to the abundance of natural gases. If there's no enemies to be fought, then they have little reason to have airplanes since airplanes aren't very economical.

No, that's because IJN decided the yamato could hold an island by itself with no air support or other supporting craft to form an actual AA defense.
Also their radar was mediocre, nowhere near as advanced as US radar, which really helped with air defence, oddly enough.

A better argument would be that a jet wouldn't be flying low enough for the 5 inches to be a meaningful threat, much less the 40's, the 20's and the whatever the fuck mmg round the gooks used.

>Implying guns can do anything against HAYAI.
Remember, these are just out of school students and under mind control. They've only managed to hit something moving after firing an obscene amount of time. Against something that fast and that small, those girls wouldn't be able to hit shit unless it's luck.
>>
>>143032217
That's bullshit. Just a few episodes back, the characters on the Harekaze were surprised by how accurate the Musashi is, as the latter wrecked the male school's ships.

If they become stupid now, that's a plot inconstancy. That wouldn't surprise me though.

Speaking of those, are they on remote control too? Because Tama manned a gun on the Harekaze physically while she was in hamster mode, and I the mermaids were more than happy to take largely-pointless-tactically potshots at the exposed superstructure.
>>
>>143032381
The Musashi only managed direct hit after firing an obscene amount of times. As long as they keep firing in the general area, even a random shell will hit something. I mean, have the Musashi managed to land multiple hits on a single target yet?
>>
>>143032489
Again, the girls were praising their accuracy, so I don't think it was just a case of firing whatever and getting lucky when you hit something.
>>
>>143032637
That's more of a testament to the ship's firing system than to the girls' aim. It landed in the general area rather than somewhere else. A rifle in the hands of an amateur isn't going to hit shit, but it is still damn accurate.
>>
>90-100 rounds left in Musashi's magazines
So that's between 30 and 33 three-gun salvos they'll all have to endure. They just might be able to exhaust that if they play their cards right and help arrives. I'm not sure that'd be particularly climactic, but whatever works.
>>
>>143032776
If that what you want to believe, be my guest. But the girls were clear, Musashi's gunners are accurate, even if they're zombies. I just hope the writers remember that and keep things consistent.
>>
>>143032948
Good gunnery in the main battery wouldn't necessarily correspond to the secondary armament, but it is a crew filled with the best of the school.

What you do?
>>
>>143025101
Because their main force was somewhere in the Philippines, they were the only ones in range.

A better question would be why the Harekaze, a pitiful DD, is engaging the BB while those modern LCS utterly failed to do anything.
>>
Why did they replace the 10cm/65 twin mounts with 5"/38 single mounts?

The 5"/38 won't be any more effective against Musashi, and the 10cm/65 was an overall better gun for destroyers.
>>
>>143034718
Take responsibility
>>143035705
>This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can
They're the only ones there. The only thing between one of the largest battleships ever built and thousands if not millions of lives. It's not really a choice at this point.
>>143035788
Better fire control probably?
>>
>>143035788
Those are actually 5"/54 caliber.
>>
>>143035864
Either way, I don't think that three 5"/54s are better than six 3.9"/65s.
>>
>>143035960
Longer barrel, longer range, better accuracy, possibly a higher rate of fire. More lighter guns would be better for fighting smaller ships or saturating the superstructure, but that range in particular will probably help them out a ton.
>>
>>143035960
The 5 inch is every way superior to the 10cm mounts in every regard by a large margin.
The most you'll get out of a 10cm mount is 15 -21 rounds per minute. A fully automated 5"/54 was designed with 40 rounds per minute. Derated to 28 RPM after 1968
>>
Forced and out of character.
Why do the Japanese have to dramatize everything?
>>
>>143035788
>>143035960
Perhaps they were the only guns in stock when the Harekaze's turret was replaced. The replacement fire director might have also been specifically calibrated for the 5" instead of the 3.9" so they decided to just switch everything to 5" instead of having mismatched guns with differing performance..
>>
>>143036117
In justification of ep 10, dramatic part is necessary I think.
>>
So we can all agree that she's absolute best girl, right? It doesn't matter who your waifu is or anything
>>
>>143036092
If those are 5"/54s, they're the Mark 16, not the Mark 42, which means you won't be seeing anywhere close to the same RoF as on modern ships.
>>
>>143036117
>out of character

It was established a long time ago that she values the crew as family. Of course she'd be hesitant on sending them on a suicide mission.
>>
>>143036092
>A fully automated 5"/54 was designed with 40 rounds per minute.
Except it's not the Mark 42 but the Mark 16.

The 10cm has higher muzzle velocity and ultimately more guns. On the other hand, the 5" has greater range, a far heavier projectile weight, and markedly better turret traverse.

>>
>>143036547
I was just about to go looking for that comparison, thanks matey. I'm betting on the range to be the ace of the guns, if nothing else.
>>
>>143036547
Honestly the projectile weight won't matter against Musashi. There's nothing that a 5" shell will penetrate that a 3.9" shell won't also penetrate. The only real advantage the 5"/54 has is range.
>>
>>143036547
I find comparing RoF in Haifuri a little bit odd considering every gun in here has an automated feeding system.

Just to nitpick, the 10cm apparently only had HE shells, while the 5/54 at least had the option to use Semi-Armor Piercing shells, so it CAN matter. Will it make a difference in this show? No, I don't think so.

>>143036741
Yeah, it's pretty pointless. That said, the passage of time during the battles and the ranges at which they engage are all sorts of screwy in the how. It's really hard to tell how much of it is better equipment and how much of it is akin to GuP's 2x speed.

It's a new hybrid to combat the rats infestation. They took all the research data from the rats project and used it to create these new humanoids that can act as a crew member in addition to being immune to and catching all those mind-controlling rats.

That or the captain had tricked her into thinking that wearing cat ears, and not the vaccine, that's makes them immune to the mind control.
>>
I wanted this to be a good show, I really did.

But the directing is so bad.

We didn't see Moka for the whole season, and they decided to stuff Moka's POV for the whole season into 5 minutes in today's episode.

Mike was off character the whole episode. She was supposed to have overcome her worries and become a good captain, isn't she? Instead she moped the whole episode. They literally threw away the whole season's worth of development today.

Also, Harekaze was set up to be the ones to face off Musashi, but instead the older girls came in and did 75% of the work.

The show just runs on pep talks about "muh ocean famiry".
>>
>>143039093
>Or maybe they were training during the time they were travelling around.
Before that point they were just running away since everyone wanted to blow the shit out of them. Then they were forgiven and given the mission of coming back to school right away, but when they were on their way they were given a new mission of checking on the Musashi. So really before that point they didn't have the time to train.
>>
>>143039244
Moka's POV was unimportant. Five minutes were all that were needed. All she did was hang around the Musashi waiting to be rescued. The past season was more about Mike bonding with the rest of the crew to become a real family. Contrast her actions in episode 5 to this episode. The Musashi was way more powerful than the Hiei and facing it was effectively suicide. It's a totally different situation.
