So why do people hate Evangelion's ending again?
Instead of some dumb fight scene or a character dying to give the viewer a cheap high. Instead of some insignificant world event happening that (much like the first and second impact) humans would just adapt to.
You have Shinji -- the character you've grown to know over the past 26 episodes -- finally learning how to accept himself. That's far more meaningful than anything else they could have done.

Everything was more fucked up beforehand.. and yet everyone recovered. It's interesting, sure, but it always turns out the same.
"You cannot exist without other humans." Shinji's Glover says this in the last episode. As a human your identity, your needs, your fantasies, your enjoyment all exist because of the perception of other's, or your perception of theirs.
Shiji -- up until that point -- had lived his life fearing others, yet at the same time he wanted what he feared. He lived in a perpetual cycle of seeking acceptance while fearing rejection, seeking meaning and fearing nothing, wanting nothing and fearing meaning, being scared to act because he was scared of himself, because he valued others above himself.
At that moment, Shinji had stopped living in the world of acting (this is why the final scene took place in a movie set) and the world of doing.

I don't know that it's widespread hatred. Dislike? Yeah, sure, some people would have preferred a cleaner, less open-ended ending; some people just don't like endings to be ambiguous, and that's fine.
Hate, like bring it up every chance they get when talking about the series? Nah, don't talk to many people like that.

All the anime is crap. Only nerdy kids thinking all the random religious crap have deep meaning like it. And adults with nostalgia goggles that remember their first fap on one of those horrible girls.
