Well Elder Kai said back in Buu saga transformations do waste energy. That was the point of Ultimate Gohan.
But I agree that does not apply much to SS1, the cost benefit is still good. It's from 2 and up the boost is not big enough to justify using it out of desperate situations.
Even Toriyama has said that SS2 and 3 are the ones where the power up isn't worth the effort and Goku would focus on training base AND Super Saiyan 1 instead.

It's honestly really funny, they made a big deal about how Goku's perfect SS form had no energy drain or emotional turmoil (he stayed in the form for weeks or months), but then in Super they come out and say he couldn't do Kaioken with Super saiyan because "energy drain and emotional turmoil". Jesus. And this AFTER they did the thing with hit, where Goku says himself that SSB drains energy so he didn't want to waste it at the start of the fight.

The reason I've seen most people advocate over the years is that SS1 when not in that powered down state Goku and Gohan were before Cell Games, still can't keep it's fury/emotion in check enough for either Kaioken ki-control or the Genkidama (which requires a pure and still heart) to be safe.
That seems to be the route Super has taken as well.

There's also the issue that Toriyama did change the rules of Super Saiyans transformations as a whole since he got back to Dragon Ball. He made the "energy waste" thing that was only evident with SS3 and mentioned in throwaway comments from Old Kaioshin to justify Gohan's new power up in Buu saga more proeminent.

I was rewatching Battle of Gods the other day, and I noticed this popping up during the God Ritual. The other images are all from planet vegeta, great apes, and the sillhouette of the original SSG. This Vegeta looks out of place.
If they already had a rough idea that Vegeta would get a god form later on, could this be meant as foreshadowing of some sort?
Also worth mentioning when Goku is trying to stop Beerus' final attack his second wind comes in the form of a bout of blue energy.

That is a double standard because DBZ was long ago and people can try to make sense of it, or pick and choose what the "true" rules are like by looking at the whole picture, but it was almost as much of a mess as Super is.

Gods in the DB universe have never been gods in the traditional sense. They're just people with extraordinarily huge power. And even then, most of them had already fallen far behind Goku before BoG. Remember that Kami used to be God of Earth and Goku surpassed pretty soon. And Supreme Kai was supposed to be a God of Gods and he was pretty much useless in a fight compared to the main characters by the time he first showed up.
The whole ritual thing was just that. A ritual. It wasn't necessary. And we don't even know if the "pure hearts" thing was even necessary. It was a legend passed down by idiot fighting space monkeys. It could be wrong, just like how other legends have been wrong in the past. Remember when in the Frieza saga they thought that there was one Legendary Super Saiyan but then everyone turned into a Super Saiyan in the Android saga? Remember when they thought Piccolo was a demon in DB but then he turned out to be a member of a race of space slugs? Remember when they said that in order to revive someone with the dragon balls you needed to have the corpse and then that stopped being a thing near the end of the Frieza saga?

In the manga Trunks and Bulma have the same hair color. Used to be purple in the original (save for a few illustrations where it's blue for some reason).
Since Toriyama got back working in Dragon Ball he has drawn the hair of both of them dark blue.
So some people think since he makes the new character design for the anime it made sense in his mind Trunks had blue hair like the newer Bulma design he made.
If anything Toei is at fault here for neither changing it to purple or changing Kid Trunks hair to blue as well.

Yay something I can post on (I don't watch Super, I'm pretty purist).
Toriyama's punches have a lot of weight to them, and as an action series should, he focuses on the sheer cool factor, so a lot of his panels are sharp and dynamic (the Super Saiyan hair's spikiness really helps with that). The action is also really brutal. In the manga, Gohan kills one of the Cell Juniors just by bashing its head open with a quick swipe.

That is to say he's likely only a few months younger than Chichi who is likely pregnant at the time that Trunks comes back. So given that she isn't instantly murdered by the androids, it's possible that Goten lives. They never specifically mention whether goten dies or not. Gohan was alive at once point so it's feasible.

They started to do the freeza saga a few months ago.
I'd buy them but I their digital releases are only viewable via some app of theirs and i'm not dealing with that shit. I'd buy them then rip them if the resolution is good but I have no way of knowing what the resolution is.

In the Buu Saga he was dead for about two days. Enma said something like "It's a good thing I decided to keep your soul out of hell" which implies that if not for Enma then Vegeta's soul would have been unrecoverable by then. When evil people are finished with hell, they get reincarnated as a new person. We don't know exactly how long it normally takes, but Buu was reincarnated in a matter of days. After over 15 years, Freeza would have been living as a completely different person.

I'm pretty sure none of that was explained. When Enma said that good thing he didn't send Vegeta's soul to hell, I'm pretty sure he said that because, as you remember, Vegeta was sent to Earth to fuse with Goku after their original plan to have him fuse with Gohan failed. And they wouldn't have been able to do that if he was in hell. I think what Enma did was also have the foresight to keep his physical form so that he could fight, which is something that is only done in extraordinary occasions like when Goku was allowed to keep his so that he could train with King Kai. But none of that has anything to do with the dragon balls.

You don't just go to hell for a specific amount of time that is the same for everyone and then get reborn. You're punished for your evil deeds specifically. And there's a huge difference between Buu and Freeza because Buu was a wild animal that didn't really know any better and just destroyed because it was in his nature. It makes perfect sense for Freeza to have to stay a longer time in hell. And since they never said that the dragon can't bring someone back to life if they're in hell, there's no contradiction.

Buu wasn't a wild animal. He clearly enjoyed himself as he was torturing everyone. He could have easily killed Mr. Satan with one hit but chose to break his nose instead. He even made fun of Goku. Wild animals don't do that. That doesn't really matter though, the reason Buu was reincarnated immediately was because Goku asked for it.
But Vegeta's soul would have been purified after only two days or so. Freeza was in hell for 17 years. Even if you refuse to believe that Freeza would have been reincarnated by then, his soul definitely wouldn't have been the same as it was when he was alive. And if Shenron wouldn't fix Freeza's body for free, why would he fix Freeza's soul?

Yes, he was like a wild animal. Lots of animals play with their prey. He clearly couldn't tell right from wrong. The whole point of Kid Buu was that unlike Super Buu, he had gone back to his primitive self, which was incapable of doing anything other than destroying.
And purifying a soul isn't an exact science. Freeza was clearly resisting it and there really didn't seem to have been much progress by then. There's absolutely no reason to believe that it should have been a faster process than this.

Those panels explain how long it would take to purify Vegeta's soul. It doesn't take the same amount of time for everyone. Knowing how long it would take for Vegeta is meaningless when trying to know how long it would take for Freeza because they're completely different people and they died under completely different circumstances.

The colors in the full color manga were added in like 20 years later and aren't by Toriyama. They look too much like the anime for me, I don't really like them. Maybe I'm too picky, but the kamehameha should be white, not yellow.
