Why is baseball so comfy in anime but actually shit irl?
>>
Because it's fucking boring.
>>
>>142919230
Seconding this, but since every anime uses it, it's also very boring. Can't understand why Japan has such a boner for this, some sort of literal battered wife syndrome me thinks
>>
I don't even like baseball particularly and I still think it's one of the best ball games in existence. There is something insanely satisfying about hitting a flying ball with a stick.

There is just one major flaw to the game:
Too many inactive players.
The whole thing is focused on the extreme fun that a select few boys (or girls) are having while everybody around them is waiting for their turn, and a few guys are on passive duty and are waiting for the ball to fly in a particularly promising direction so they can run for a few seconds and feel marginally useful.
>>
The mechanics of pitching are incredible but the games can go on quite long

I find it a good sport to have on in the background while doing other things
>>
>Why is 2D > 3D?
What a silly question.

Baseball is fucking boring since they're standing still most of the time.

The reason you like sports anime over actual sports is because you connect to the characters, therefore you care about what they're doing.

Basketball used to be shit because people would just turtle with the ball until some guy figured out to add a timer so you have to keep the ball moving.
Normalfags are attracted to the motion and competition. Its why stuff like circuses, martial arts, MMA, wrestling etc. is popular. If you don't like that shit, then you go to your animes where its all about cute 2D girls because you don't like competition.
You're still excited by motion, which is why running is in every anime OP and they try their best to simulate movement without killing their budget during fight scenes.
I could go into more sports shit about how foreigners basically brought different sports like wrestling, boxing, and especially baseball into japan and made it 'cool' like hollywood movies and such but I think you get the idea.
It wasn't the bombs that changed them.
It was the baseball.

A lot of people find baseball boring because they don't understand all the rules, I guess.

Soccer is a very straightforward spectator sport, with something constantly moving. Baseball is really more about quick plays. It really is kind of like a tactical RPG. Having a runner on second, rather than first with someone up to bat opens a shitload of more options and potential plays on the field rather than if he was just at first, which is why you see sacrifice bunts if there are no outs.

Hell, the game becomes 10x more exciting if you know even a little bit about pitching and what they're trying to do when they throw a certain pitch, and so on.

Most people 'know' how baseball works, but they don't really, if that makes sense. Yeah, you hit a ball with a bat and catch it if you can, but it really is a bit more deep than that. Understanding the plays and how tense things really can get every inning makes it a lot more fun to watch.
>>
>>142930441

American Football has even less going on than Baseball most of the time. You watch an entire game just to see four complete passes and two touchdowns. The other 99% of the time is big guys ramming into each other for 5 seconds, then huddling for 45 seconds.

All that said, you can make an argument that any sport has downtime. I love Football (Soccer). But you can go the entire 90 (+5) minutes with no one scoring a goal. If all someone cares about is the goal, then they'll be bored to tears. I enjoy Football because I like to see the technical aspect. But many people (especially in America) don't even care about it. I just find it ironic that the same people who gripe about Football seem to love Baseball. I guess watching a guy spit and rub his nuts between hits is more interesting than watching a guy run for 20 minutes straight and then get elbowed in the face.

Baseball is scary. It's about catching a tiny flying ball that's literally going hundreds of miles per hour. It's a dangerous sport that can easily break your nose, knock your teeth out, or even kill you.

ah yes

the technical aspect of soccer
>>
>>142931761

The ball goes max 180 MPH off a bat and most pitchers can't even go past 100 MPH when throwing. It can be dangerous, but 99% of the time, the ball goes in expected places. And you're trying to avoid boredom more than the ball.

The game is actually more dangerous to the fans than the players. This comes from someone who has been hit twice by a baseball and once by a softball. My head is a magnet for the damn things. Yet players can play 3,000 games and never get hit.

Orange Delivery. Mostly untranslated, but it got me hooked on Japanese womens' curling.
The girls made it all the way to the final at the World Championship in March, and they were up in the eighth end, but they ended up losing to the Swiss team 6-9. Satsuki-chan a cute skip.
>>
>>142931830

Flopping is obviously a problem. And pretty much should be gone thanks to dozens of slow motion cameras all over. But since FIFA still refuses to allow replays, officials are stuck going by their judgement. And so it will always remain.

The big problem with Football is actually the off-sides rule. They should be like Hockey and allow any shot. This would increase the number of goals and the 'excitement' of the game. As well as make defenders work more.
>>
>>142931872
>max 180 MPH off a bat
I hope that was a typo. The upper limit on exit velocity is probably around 130 mph. The highest exit velocity since statcast started tracking it was 124 mph.
>>
>>142931886
Anything is dangerous when it goes over a hundred miles an hour, dickhead. You might think differently if a baseball hit you in the side of the head and gave you lasting brain damage.
>>
>>142924809

>>
>>142931966

Yes. It happens every Soccer game. If you get a lenient official, they'll call everything a foul. And Soccer players realize this, so they overact any time they get touched.

>>
>>142931637
Not really. A game like hockey is much more straightforward. It's easy to understand the plays that are made. Any viewer will feel a sense of tension during any shot the team down by one goal makes. Any breakaway, or pass down the ice.

Baseball to most is hit a ball, and catch a ball. People don't feel a lot of tension when one team is up by 3, but those moments come a lot. A game I watched last night could have been drastically different if a few different plays were made, or hits. That's what makes it exciting, but during those moments a lot of people don't really understand whats happening.

Personally I'd say it's because the focus is different in some sports. You can follow the puck and know when to shit your pants because it's either in the net or not. With baseball you can just watch the ball for 9 innings and be bored as fuck unless there's a big hit or a HR. If you don't know the plays, or pitching beyond "throw ball get strike three out", the game will be incredibly shitty and boring to most people.
>>

Well, I don't care for the MLS, but its growing quite well. And in a city like Portland, its the most popular sport. The Timbers are basically the best team in MLS, while the Trail Blazers are a joke in basketball.

Because sports anime maintains your attention with character drama, and then slowly eases you into the sport itself. They usually explain the sport as if you've never seen it before, which is a lot more accessible to people who don't care about sports. Also there's no real downtime to it since it's fiction.
As for RL sports, it helps a LOT to have personal experience with the sport. But even then, you don't need it to get into any sport, all you have to do is genuinely take interest in it and try to learn about it. I've seen plenty of American Football games, but it still bores the ever-living shit out of me because I'm just not interested in it. And yet, I watch all 162 games of the MLB season.

It's also because the players in games are all highly skilled and tend to execute the same successful plays over and over but in sports anime a tiny variation on a technique is ground breaking and wins the match for them.

>>142919180
Maybe for you but baseball is the sport you get a cup of coffee/beer/etc and a snack or two and relax

The stereotypical image of an /a/utist is a skinny virgin with anime posters all over his room and a shitload of merchandise and figurines.

But if you've ever ventured outside of moe-land you'd see how varied it is. The cycle group on /n/ might as well be an anime club at this rate. There's quite a bit of /o/ autism on /a/ as well.

It's really quite interesting to see interests collide. It's always funny to me when, in whatever thread, it occasionally spirals off into some hardcore off-topic discussion about motorcycles, or cycling, or baseball, or football, soccer.
>>
Because you connect with the characters and story more than the sport, the massive amounts of downtime and myriad of rules are often skipped and the main cast are almost all simple, clean and attractive.

You turn on the tv to watch some baseball and have a bunch of guys chewing things obnoxiously, spitting, standing still, looking around and chatting constantly, and I mean *constantly*.

The sheer amount of downtime between pitches is probably a large factor, especially in slower games with lots of balls and fouls. The shots of the players and staff looking bored, blank or relaxed downplay the events of the game, which isn't surprising considering downtime and the amount of games played. It is technically a job after all.

Basically the romance of it in anime clashes with the reality of the sport in the real world

Footaball is alright to watch and I find the intensity of each goal and attack in general to be quite higher than Basketball where the hype is generally in seeing a break in the scoring tradeoffs and one team getting ahead while the other one has to catch up.

Also football is really fun to play. I understand why colonials would hate it. The fat fucks need scooters to get around shopping malls. The thought of having to run around a massive field by itself would be enough to cause one a heart attack.

Baseball is just utter shite though.
>>
>>142933155
Football is pretty good, but every single time the momentum of an attack is disturbed by some cocksleeve diving, or the offside rule.

A match is only ever good when the referee doesn't pay attention to divers, which is basically never.

Soccer is good because there's only one thing to convert and it's probably the most valuable single point of any sport since most games are decided on one or two goals.

You don't feel elation when somebody is about to shoot a basket or hit a homer in the early game but when a goal approaches at any time in soccer it can tear your heart out because it could be the death knell.

I know you're trolling, but Japan has always been about taking stuff from other cultures and improving it. Wither its India, China, Netherlands, Germany and America. Sadly, this sometimes turns out good (like imitating the good music of the 80s in the 1990s) and sometimes turns out bad (current big trend is shitty grunge and rap). Japan always seems to be using the fad that was popular 10 years before in the west. And since the west has had shitty music and movies for 20 years, that means we have to struggle through 10 more years of shit for Japan.

Okay, how about this:
The batter is now allowed to throw 3 consecutive balls in 3 second intervals.
Runners are now allowed to run freely on the field and hinder the defenders e.g. by tackling and grappling them. Of course runners are still out if they're not on base in time. Defenders are likewise allowed to attack runners.
Runners now have to overcome obstacles, such as water ditches and walls.

People actually hit the ball and catch it in anime.

In real life, hitting the ball is quite difficult and catching it involves running all over the damn place. It's a real workout. If you want something casual or "comfy", then you just toss the ball at each other and catch it in mitts. Of course, anime generally wants something more interesting without the characters putting more effort into it, so the baseballs are magnetically attracted to the bat and the gloves, making every swing hit and every catch work without moving too much.

Hockey isn't.
Fighting is a legitimate part of the sport. They don't break up fights till someone falls or it's a stalemate, or too one sided. They let them fight it out.
It's fast, it's brutal, it takes skill, and there are some amazing plays that happen.

Is there a hockey anime yet? Or even manga?

Enjoy your stupid neutered Kenjutsu warrior sport where you can only hit the head, wrists, and right side of the chest, and you need to fight the same way whether you are right or left handed. >People actually liking sports
People only enjoy sports because other people are interested in them. If all knowledge of all sports was erased from the earth tomorrow, I can guarantee you that shit like soccer, baseball, etc would never, ever be reinvented. Things like racing would probably come back, but anything involving balls is boring as fuck and hails from a time when that sort of thing really was the pinnacle of entertainment. Nowadays we have plenty of better things, noticeably videogames and robots, that are leagues more interesting to watch than a bunch of men who have nothing to do with your actual province or nation duke it out in an arbitrary game against other arbitrary teams.

tl;dr hang yourself for being so easily influenced, it's honestly pathetic.
>>
Don't care about sports. Hard to get into because the majority of the game feels like redundant filler. Don't care about the personalities and individual moments are largely repetitive and cool things are by large luck and seem better because of the break of tedium

No matter where, /a/, or FB, twitter, or tumblr, a hockey fan will inevitably butt in and mention something about their sport being superior to another. About the speed, or how hardcore it is to be on skates cutting goalies jugulars, or how the now neutered fights are so brutal, etc.

I mean damn, I like hockey but why the fuck are the fans like this. They'll literally sniff out two twelve year olds talking about like, soccer, on the discussion section of some meme image and interject about how hockey is better and also totally not boring and also brutal
>>
>>142957394
Jesus Christ, this entire autistic rant is the pinnacle of edgy chan elitism.

Who the fuck knows if some sport like football or baseball with all their wack-ass and convoluted rules would be recreated in said world, but I'd put my money on some type of sport being reinvented. Why? Because even in todays world, people still do like going outside and burning some energy, and doing it with friends or acquaintances in some type of friendly competition is just something all humans have liked/done throughout our history, in many, many various forms.
