The detective stories are a way in which Chitanda forces Oreki to realize he is unique and to change his view of himself and his role in the world. Did you even fucking pay attention to what you were watching? Did you not notice how the detective cases were all testw for Satoshi to measure himself up to Oreki and realize that at the end of the day he is not really "great," he is only good (hence his admission that he is only a database, a reality he does not want to admit until the ABC Murder Cases in the School Festival). I think it is wrong to look at the last arc as particularly good ending point for the series. For me the series spiked and should have concluded with the School Festival Arc. The remaining mysteries: the helicopter and hinamatsuri mysteries felt like an unnecessary epilogue to a series that had already made its point clear. I think the fault lies both in the LN author's descission to linger on Oreki's and Chitanda's romance and Takemoto's for not ending the series a bit sooner. That being said, Oreki's imagined assertion of a possible future as Chitanda's husband as well as his self-motivated involvement in the Murder Movie Mysteries and Cooking Competition do point towards an understanding that he is a individual that can impact the world around him in a meaningful world. I don't that this realization is complete in the series, in part because of Oreki's realization that he was manipulated by Irisu during the Movie Mystery, but ideas of himself as a possible protagonist would never had occured without Chitanda's interventions and his participation in the mysteries.
