It's because we've seen many facets to him and have seen him grow up. He's shown fear, sorrow, and unlike Griffith he even remembers the dreams of the people who were under him. Casca herself was shocked and probably didn't even remember them, it's also why he got pissed when Casca tells him he doesn't care about anyone but himself. He's pretty much a diamond in how many facets he has to his character. Pic related always hits me hard, when I read this. He suffered numerous losses and isn' a boring badass that never struggles and never show any emotion while effortlessly killing opponents. He was pretty much fated to die on the eclipse, but not only told fate to go fuck itself. And that's one of the major themes series free will vs fate.

Another story I love that I will never be able to talk about on /a/ anymore because they had to make a fucking anime and attract all kinds of shit people to the threads. Same with Shingeki no Kyojin, same with One Punch Man and now my loved Berserk.
Berserk threads are dead already. "Who will date who" and "who I fap to" shit ain't so strong yet, but the conversations about the anime already drowned our old chats about the lore. I can only hope that this cartoon will end up such a huge failure that it gets cancelled and then MAYBE the threads will be useable again, IF the crappy folk tires and leave.

I mean I know it'd have tons of monster of the week episodes (or even seasons) and have shit that'd conflict with the manga now, like guts battling dragons (before skullknight done fucked up).
