No, not killing Ray Penber, that was bad, but he didn't know it was a trap, and all it did was confirm what L already knew thanks to the times of death and the first victim: that Kira was a High School student in Japan.
Light's REAL screw-up was when he intentionally let L know that he has access to police information. That meant that L narrowed down from "Japanese High School student" (of which there are millions) to "Japanese High School student connected with someone in the investigation" (of which there are hundreds). It was only a matter of time before L caught him after that. If he had just kept killing like he usually does L never ever would have found him unless Light did another stupid thing.
Well he was hounded by the smartest motherfuckers on the planet. That and he had a moral code. Even after L's death he could have just killed off everyone on the investigation team.
But, you know. Light was better than that.

If anyone who has red/watched Death Note would pick up a copy of it, rest assured he wont be as much as retarded as Light and he wont get caught easily.

The whole thing about Light is that he was too fucking egotistical. If he didn't kill Lind L. Tailor, which proved that Kira was in Japan, he would've been still Kira could have been considered this nebulous being that would make it extremely hard to catch. The police info didn't come later, and that was another big mistake.
Light's arrogance via corruption from the Death Note was going to be the downfall of him one day. He couldn't resist the lure to becoming a living god and all the trappings with that kind of thinking.
