It's a major problem with game to anime/movie productions, because games are designed with the intent to have as much player time invested as possible to justify their cost. If you spent $30~60 on a game that you beat in 5 hours, you'd probably feel cheated. The problem is that an anime like that is only truly marketable to people who have played the games. You'd think that'd entice people to play the games, but there's a much larger population that'd just go "I have to have played the games to get the jokes? Well fuck that, I won't watch the anime OR play the games. Take that, Jewcom," and then ignore it.
The best way to have a game adaptation is to cover the core plot of the games while featuring easter eggs or random lines that reference the games. This ensures that non-players aren't alienated while still having something to look forward to in the games themselves (should they become interested), while simultaneously giving service to the people that made it popular enough to deserve an anime in the first place.
If you HAVE time for OC, then that's great. If not, then you don't, and it sucks.

You'd think they'd want to appeal to the ones playing the new games to increase success, and not the fans of the older ones. Didn't say otherwise, 3U also kept the universally hated underwater combat. I'm pretty sure 3U's mayority of audience either forgot or never played FU since it was on a different line of systems and hence the praise it got. Not only does did it kept all the flaws from Tri but also didn't even bother to have more content than FU, that includes non-subspecies monsters.
Either way 4U completely trounces 3U in content. 4U also has online multiplayer, i.e: the biggest replayability aspect of MH, unlike 3U on the 3DS which the japs had for a year yet they still ate it up.

3U had unfucked hitboxes, a huge plus over unite. The complaint of less content compared to unite is kinda dubious to me, I (personally) found tri gen monsters to be much higher quality fights (compare khezu to gigginox for example). 4U just kinda pads the roster up with these old 1st and 2nd gen monsters, and again I really dont think it added much to the game.
You're right that 4U has online though, but japan generally seems to make alot of use out of the local multiplayer, so 3U multi really wasn't FUBAR to them.
