15, but it was a couple years after it came out, and I had looked at some of the theories/explanations before hand, so I didn't really have trouble figuring out what was happening at any point. I don't think doing that really took away from the experience for me. Tumbling down still hit me pretty damn hard.

No, anybody could materialize when they wanted to. Also the title is just gibberish that Anno thought sounded cool.
>>
>>142712749
>the title is just gibberish that Anno thought sounded cool.
One of my favorite things is how Japanese creators will sometimes do that. Just come up with a few words they think sound really fucking cool and stick them in the title. I can't think of any other examples off the top of my head, but there's some good ones.

17. I missed on a lot of the symbolism because I was focusing on the waifu material. I was also too invested in the characters and how badly they were hurting to care for the actual plot.

something did trigger inside me, though. the imagery, maybe the tone. the idea of ending everything really resonated with me.

I was 22. I had seen the series on SBS as a kid (can pin down how old, definitely single digits), but I was too young to get any of the symbolism. I had never watched any of the films. Marathoned the whole series and finished with EoE. Afterwards I came down with pneumonia. Double lung, fevers reaching 42C, I thought I was going to die. All my hallucinations were in one way or another influenced by EoE, and they were terrifying. I waw bouncing between fearing death and dying to actually welcoming and embracing it. In the end I had to be strapped to my hostipal bed, and then I got filled with tranquilisers. I still flinch every time i hear the opening chords to 'Komm, Susser Tod'.

Some time has past since then, and I've recently rewatched the film. It was a little uncomfortable because of my experience but not impossible to sit through. In a strange way it added a new level of enjoyment to the film.
>>
I was 17. Didn't understand shit, thought it was overhyped.

Watched it again a few months back (i'm 22 now) and realized it's actually really good.
>>
>>142707373
I was in high school, probably 16, maybe 15. I wasn't a dumb fuck by that time so I knew that the people going on about muh symbolism were full of shit, but it still impressed me, like watching Lain for the first time or Takashi Miike's films.

I had the whole thing on pirated VHS tapes that I bought online. I'm not even sure what belongs to The End of Evangelion and what to Death & Rebirth since I binged on it and haven't watched it again in ages.

I think it's easy to underestimate how much of a trip something like EoE can be for a teenager, especially during that time when both the internet and otaku culture were getting popular, but still retained some mystery. When it was easier to pirate physically and you couldn't just google everything, because google and wikipedia didn't exist and anime databases were in their infancy.

I want to add a couple of things.

First, my friend saw it too. And I was like "Shinji jacks off to Asuka in EoE". But he was like "nah, you're shitting me". I tried to convince him, but he didn't believed it and then he watched first half of EoE with his dad. He didn't make it to second half, so I had to tell it to him, but I understood it pretty poorly. I managed to convey the idea that Shinji didn't accept instrumentality and got out of the sea though.

Second, people were so dumb back then. Like remember that retardation that the woman that Shinji chokes is a mix of Asuka, Rei and Misato? How dumb that is. Now I rewatched it and I was like "okay, everyone recreated their image of themselves, s Asuka recreated herself with damaged eye and arm because spear pierced her eye and arm before she died" Like, how complicated is that? But the biggest problem is that we took all of "symbolism" seriously. Like, I actually read the bible because of Eva (and all Freid, and listened to classical music, I also was making VN about Rei). Like Sephirotic tree, I studied that shit and tried to firure out which sphere refers to what character. But, even if all that stuff is bullshit the character stuff is incredibly solid, every time I rewatch eva I expect to be dissappointed, but no every time I just discover new things to appreciate.
>>
24, watched it two months ago.
I love the perfect amount of mystery throughout and the character relations. I didn't consider deep but super cryptic. It does a good job of actually explaining the point near the end.
I kind of wish I watched it in highschool though.
>>
>>142707373

14. No joke.
>>
I think this series was pretty difficult for people who are christians or those who have read the bible, as there is little meaning in what the bible characters do, its all about the characters. The bible stuff maybe confuses christians into thinking its something else and hence when they dont get anything out of it they call it pretentious.

Unlike all to much cinema, EoE completely holds back from anything like sentimentality. That gives its unrelenting emotional brutality more impact.

Plus, Asuka reminded me painfully of parts of my teenage self, so she'd already become top-tier daughteru material while I'd been watching the series. Seeing her get the shit end of the stick all the way through hurt.

"NGE is a mishmash of religious symbols with inexplicable, very loose or even non-existent connections to the actual story-line, bundled together with a cast of some sick, seemingly sociopathic and weird characters, plus a large dose of confusing science fiction." - copy/paste because I'm lazy.
So.. NGE was released in 1995, EoE in 1997. Sure, it did have an impact on the industry, but there were tons of other anime at that time, that wasn't garbage [DBZ, Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon, Macross7, Samurai Pizza Cats, SEL, Cowboy Bebop] the list goes on), that had impacted the industry, and continues to do so. Just because something "had an impact on an industry" doesn't make it immediately good. Because seriously, Gundam Wing was total ass, but it impacted the industry pretty well.

The only thing remotely good about eva was making me have such an intense passionate hatred for the characters... which in itself is pretty awesome, it's far easier for me to love a character than hate a character to the point of EoE being basically a release.

So, fuck you and your "shit bait'. This anime sucked balls. I don't think the budget cuts give it much leeway for me either, considering plenty of other anime had even lower budgets and came out pretty mint.

NGE created the modern late night anime market. Anime as you know it now likely wouldn't exist were it not for NGE. Hell, Serial Experiments Lain and Bebop both likely wouldn't exist were it not for NGE.

As for your point at the begining, the symbolism stuff is a typical western misinterpretation of what those symbols were there for and what they meant. The only character in NGE that is clearly sociopathic is Gendo, and even that is arguable.

I don't really understand why you hate the characters so much. What about them so deeply bothers you?

> typical western misinterpretation

What...? This is a direct quote from people who worked on it, and the legend himself.

"Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought it would be mysterious. None of the staff who worked on Eva are Christians. There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool."

– Kazuya Tsurumaki, Assistant Director of Neon Genesis Evangelion

“Evangelion is like a puzzle, you know. Any person can see it and give his/her own answer. In other words, we’re offering viewers to think by themselves, so that each person can imagine his/her own world. We will never offer the answers, even in the theatrical version. As for any Evangelion viewers, they may expect us to provide the ‘all-about Eva’ manuals, but there is no such thing. Don’t expect to get answers by someone. Don’t expect to be catered to all the time. We all have to find our own answers.”

– Hideaki Anno, Director of Neon Genesis Evangelion

Yes, and you've misinterpreted them. The Christian symbols are not literary symbols within the context of the work. They are things that actually happen within the context of the work and they exist to grant a sense of import and significance to the proceedings of the story.

No? It's a really overrated anime. Next thing you're going to say is everyone that hasn't watched Erased yet should get out of /a/ too. Not everyone watches flavor of the season shit. And, considering the severe quantity of Eva threads we have and the severe quantity of replies. I can assure you many people watched it this year. And many are as underwelmed as ever by this pretentious SoL harem teen-angst shit. It's cowboy bebop all over again.

Eva isn't complex or deep in the slightest and you're retarded for thinking otherwise.
There's a reason why it's so popular with little kids in Japan.

I saw it on VHS bro.

Either use 僕だけがいない街, or Erased. This Hepburn shit is really just you trying to fit in.
>muh reddit
Notice how you've not actually done anything worthy of a reply? All you did was draw hastily conclusions and base your response off of those. Instead of actually replying to what I have to say you are essentially just talking to yourself. You're also making an issue out of something so utterly devoid of meaning. Can't handle actually responding to what I have to say. Why did I even respond to your delusional ramblings? I'm too nice for this place.

There's nothing worthwhile to reply to. You've call it overrated, and then instead of elaborating on why, you bring up a strawman by baselessly comparing it to unrelated seasonal tripe. This is identical to comparing your post to plebbit.
>I can assure you many people watched it this year
This is stating an obvious, not disproving the post you're replying to. Them you go to spew some buzzword like "SoL" and "pretentious", of course not elaborating, and only serving to cheaply trivialize the show. Good job, retard.

Making an Eva thread on /a/ is like disecting a frog.

Well, what's it like to dissect a frog?
>>
>>142740611
when you dissect a frog everybody either comes up with insane theories on what things are inside the frog or are fighting if the red, blue or purple organs are the nicest.

22, on the flight home from Japan July 2015.

I kind of put off Evangelion altogether for at least 10 years.
>>
>>142743093
In attempt to try and convince yourself that Eva is anything but a children's cartoon that only takes a tiny bit of brain power to understand.
>>
>>142743159
I saw plenty in it, far more than you most likely.
I'm just willing to admit what I saw in it isn't particularly complex and is rather common in literature and similar mediums.
>>
>>142743173
You're just ignoring the opinions of others that may have saw something in it, just because you didn't. You understand that humans are subjective creatures. You're just ignoring that there might be depth to a show because you didn't actually try digging for it.

Why would I not? It's my favorite show. And precisely because it's my favorite Anime I can admit that it isn't very deep, despite emotionally affecting me.
>>
>>142743237
Ok, so you don't find it complex. So if you saw through it, you can't say that there wasn't any depth to it. Sure it might have been obvious to you of "such great taste" but you should probably consider that there is at least something to it that may set it apart from other shows in the Japanese animation industry.
>>
>>142707373
Still did not.

Even the staff say themselves it's just a ripoff of the shows before it, though. So not exactly.
>>
>>142743454
It's capacity to have horse cock crammed into it.
Some don't think it can take it past the head, while others are sure it can go ballz deep.

Haven't you dug yourself into some kind of corner here? Next you'll be calling Naruto an avant-garde artistic masterpiece, all the while maintaining that actual worthwhile shows like Eva are in fact not very "deep" at all.
>>
>>142743533
>i like evangelion more than you

Is this kindergarten? This is exactly why I put off watching evangelion for so long. The fanbase is so fucking retarded.

I don't necessarily disagree with you though. There are quite obviously a lot of "let's throw in this shit and make it seem deep" going on in Evangelion. Didn't they even confirm that they indeed made explosions and shit look like christian crosses just because they wanted it to seem meaningful?
>>
>>142743495
>it's just a ripoff of the shows that came before it
This is basically how all creative people make stuff. Being able to bring together elements of the things you like in an effective and compelling manner is a significant skill.

I have never watched it. I'm glad I watched Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and the Big O instead during Toonami's midnight showing. So many edge lords think Evangelion is deep just because they were 10 when they watched it and had the Christian cross, so deep.
>>
Should I watch the director's cut? I've seen the regular series, does it add that much to it?
>>
>>142745199
there is a directors cut for episodes 21, 22, 23, and 24 - those are the only episodes

and yes, they do add quite a few more scenes which clarify a few plot points

they also have better animation in a few scenes apparently

Yes, especially 22.
It also adds more into the context of EoE

It is a children's cartoon. Most Anime are.
It just happens to be favorite among them, but I can recognize that what it has to say isn't very revolutionary or complex. In fact it's been done hundreds of times before in the medium, and executed even better.
