I don't get it. What exactly is the point of his character?
Yeah, he's probably one of the weakest points of the show. But doesn't drag it don't either, and the episode in which they go to his home planet was great.

He's something of an audience avatar, but he's primarily there because it's easier to write trios than duos.
Two characters can bicker and be entertaining, but having a third allows you to set something else up while they do that. It also means you get three relationships to play with instead of just one.
