KLK is a better TTGL, and I do love TTGL.
The timeskip just didn't work. Things don't start really clicking again until the Spiral Labyrinth, and TTGL's ending sucked, thematically. Completely flew in the face of everything established over the show's run.

TTGL no matter what some people says, is one of the best anime ever made. Not only by the unexpected depth of the plot but by the artstyle, realisation, the quality of animation, voices and musics propulsed TTGL in the top 10 of best anime ever made. The ambiance was made by masters of this art to reflect not only the likeability of the characters but their feeling and the continuous exploding and expending, or should I say drilling storyline realised as the ultimate masterpiece of the best studio ever made that's gainax. TTGL is almost perfect if you take out this terrible direction mistake that was ep4. Sadly we can't call it the best anime ever made for the simple reason there is a better one : K-on.

Kamina was great though. Him and Simon are opposites. Deep down Simon was someone full of energy and hopes, but he also had a fear for the unknown. And deep down, Kamina was a frail guy, but he was full of energy and hopes because Simon was there to inspire him whenever he saw how Simon really was. Simon inspired Kamina, and by doing the same for Simon, his role was over.
You could say it was Nia that truly gave him his courage, but she was more like the last straw.

Second half od the first part and first part of the second were significantly weaker. Yoko has pretty much no personality and Nia is really cliche. The ending has deaths of too many side characters that never get developed so their deaths don't leave any impact at all and just seem like forced drama.
It is still pretty amazing but it does have several flaws.

It improves when there's a larger roster because most of the characters are flat individually. Kamina's a goofball and several characters point that out in the very first episode. You don't have to understand him or be motivated as a viewer, but appreciate his influence on Simon and the value he instills in the narrative
