I genuinely don't understand the appeal. I have read both To-Love-Ru and To-Love-Ru Darkness. It's just a fan service haram manga. It has next to no story and seems really stupid to me.

This. That's all you need to hook up a good chunk of male and even female audience. Also make the harem so big that it will serve literally every taste (well...almost, but there isn't much left) and it's done.

Because besides beeing drawed by one of the best ilustrators for dick teasing,
there's something that To-loverRu does really well,
and that is staying relevant for a long period without feeling like the autor's dragging a dead horse.
Nobody would give two fucks about it if it still were just lala inventions failing with sexual results.
Instead, the author kept introducing characters an "plotlines" that actually kept the series fresh,
and that's something you don't see very regularly in mangakas/authors of long running series.
TL;DR: It's super interesting
Because Yabuki is the literal madman.
Nemesis is the catalyst for all the plot in Darkness. Everything else is just PLOT.
