I just think the explanation is a little silly is all. It makes me wonder if they actually did originally plan on Yukito end and Syaoran was genuinely meant to just be the rival, kind of like how Urusei Yatsura was meant to have Ataru x Shinobu end but switched when Ataru x Lum turned out to be way more popular.
