I would say Brotherhood was equal or better then the original. The Dub was arguably better, and IMO, better then the original Japanese voices. The animation was far better, and it stuck to the Magna's ending.
However, it did skip/rush a lot in the beginning which is sorta important. The two together make one good presentation of the original source.

Why it's a horrible manga; you can't improve on shit.
Noein should get a remake to fix the pacing issues and overall improve it everywhere. It is a great anime in every way, but it fails at being a timeless masterpiece just by beaing a tiny little bit to weak in all areas.
In general, unless you change stuff they don't add anything, the best options are to take some old mangas perhaps and make an anime closer, or make new ideas. Could be interesting with a Ranma focusing on gender identity and struggles with society's expectations of gender roles, for example. Just taking an old concept and take it in a new direction.
Why earth do people bring up YuYu Hakusho?, it adapted the entire manga and even improved the ending from the manga. Nothing new can be brought to the show.

Trigun could use a remake since the original anime had to make up it's own ending and wussied out on a lot of stuff that made the manga good.
Akira OVA that covers the entire manga. I doubt there's any interest for it, but I'd love to see it. It doesn't even need to be as fluid or flashy as the film.

The first part goes very slow, but it improves vastly after the Shin Arc. Just read the manga is way more agile. If you still don't like it, then you are a hopeless pleb.
