If the starting point is the real world the story is more relatable and easier to pull off because making actually interesting fantasy settings is harder.

Every culture in the world and every society has always had stories about other places where the really interesting stuff is happening with the really interesting beings since always.
Sometimes, that interesting place is a mythical time with demigods and whatever walking the Earth, sometimes, it's the underworld or the plane of spirits and ghosts, sometimes, it's the world of the gods and demons, and sometimes, it's other planets with ayyy lmaos.

What is usually different in anime is the fact that it comes and goes. I mean, with the exception of Inception it usually it's like a trip, when they go, do stuff and come back, the end. While in shows like Lain the character come and go many times. Same with Paprika, Perfect Blue, Summer Wars etc.
