I'm not a fan of explaining the reference because the translator can often miss the reference, assume the wrong reference, or sometimes even attribute references to things that aren't even meant to be references.

Another thing I don't like about it is that the whole point of a reference is that it's not supposed to be explained, you either get it or don't. I suppose that's somewhat true for puns too, but there's a difference between a play on words and "remember this thing?".
