Holy shit did my friend ever point out something interesting. Look at the end card. The red string doesn't actually attach to the sign, it loops as a heart over him and keeps going. Sign-bro isn't her fated one; he's her first love. It's like fucking poetry; it rhymes.

Anyway, more seriously, ANIME OF THE FUCKING CENTURY. This episode was so amazing. I absolutely love how the cooking class section plays out with the new teacher. So far, the misfortune the girls experience has been portrayed as a sort of act of nature. Shitty rolls on every check. But the outside perspective of the other teacher completely recasts their misfortune as a sort of deficiency of attentiveness. This changes the nature of their misfortunes into something for which they can be blamed, and that leads right into a natural showcase of shame and friendship. With this show, I honestly can't tell if I'm inventing things to read into or if it's a fucking masterpiece. The pool segment was far weaker in comparison, but the payoff at the end is god damn heart warming. We keep getting these super sappy messages about friendship and happiness, but it feels like the show finds so many ways to make it meaningful rather than trite. Everything about this show, from the OP to the ED and all the weird chibi panels in between, is a perfection of this genre. In this episode, the audience is basically made to view certain events from the perspective of the other teacher. That simple introduction of a sort of "real" logic grounds the entire scenario of their friendship in the face of danger. From the perspective of that teacher, there doesn't exist the strange moe luck that normally counteracts the otherwise serious situations that arise.

I don't know, I guess that more and more I find myself really amazed by little touches like those. The really popular shows just seem to lack the subtlety that somehow gets put into these weird niche shows. Of course that extends to the source material to some extent.
>>
>>142347528
>inb4 the other end card next episode shows Hanako with a red string as well
>>
>>142347528
>The red string doesn't actually attach to the sign

Except maybe it would end at his hand which is off screen to begin with.
>>
>>142347528
I concur. The show is so deceptively simple and one note yet the way it handles its theme as well as the overarching message about happiness/friendship/misfortune every episode is always amazingly executed.

I'll be honest here, this is the kind of shit I'd let my daughter or niece watch to actually teach her something. Hopefully doesn't become a dyke but hey.

No seriously, look at this shit. The water that splashed up forms "splash" (presuming the subs were accurate) and falls away. I didn't notice until I went back to get a screen-grab and saw it happen without the subs distracting me. I know its basically the simplest shit you could ever imagine, but IT FUCKING HAPPENED.

Have I finally lost my marbles or is this show the greatest thing since striped pantsu?

>>142347604
The string goes off screen, symbolizing that her true fated one awaits her in the future that exists outside of the show. Let's be real here, I doubt this is getting a second season. So, we are never going to see that true fated one (unless something happens in the manga, which I will definitely start reading unless a season 2 does get announced).

>>142347819
I am happier with every episode. Each episode is the high point of my week, and it's all probably going to push me into going on the offensive to break up an engagement to save a friend.
The happiness class feels like it is directly supposed to mirror the viewer's journey toward happiness from encountering the series. It really strikes at a nerve of mine as a writer how the entire series is designed. A few episodes were kind of weak, but I really can attribute that to a serial format.
Whatever, let me summarize it this way. I always use the title Anne Happy because that is the most accurate definition of the show. There is Anne and happiness.

>>142347878
We can keep going together. Just because it's over doesn't mean it ended. The happiness was in your heart all along, so stay and share it with us, okay?
>>
So, who is Sayuri?

I'm in the same boat, friend. I fucking love all of this shit though. Sure, a few of them aren't interesting or cute, but so many of them are just perfect injections of happiness and/or effective transitions. And shit, I bet they can tighten the budget quite a bit with all of this. It just feels like another one of the master strokes at work in this show.
>>
>>142348263

Were there any more references aside from the Char one and that one eyecatch last episode?
>>
>>142348263
Not in eyecatches but they seem very fond of Gundam references.
>>
>>142348017
Did you notice the sound effect for the fishing line spinning and then going down the screen when, Sensei fished up Hanako?

Also in the eyecatch where hanako is sleeping on top of botan, Botan thinks she is suffering from kana shibari or sleep paralysis.

Also when Hibiki gets the score -300 the negative sign hits ren and makes her fall of the screen.

In the eyecatch when Hanako and Hibari carry Botan on the suitcase there is an ambulance in the background

When Hanako says she will continue to drink Milk, there is a cow noise and a cow face and bottles of milk come down the screen.

In the eyecatch with Hibiki telling Ren to wake up there are z's in the water, and before that a girl gets hit by the ball as she comes out of the water

It's actually absurd how many eyecatches/chibis they have now. I don't think I've ever seen an anime with that many. Maybe a SHAFT show?
>>
>>142349220
But at the same time, this is sort of the bare minimum for what should be happening in the medium. There are all sorts of these little visual shortcuts and flairs, but how many shows actually do ANYTHING to make themselves stand out visually or use the medium to this extent?

I think it's "that" which is making Luluco the other show that I'm really loving this season.

>>142349355
The way she said Excalibur was what really sold it. The little bits of audio compound the cuteness.
Also, about the knife, did the entire cutting edge lose its integrity and chip away all at once through shear bad luck? It's details like that which makes her misfortune so hilariously ominous.

So I don't get it. Does Hanako's charm inhibit her reality bending misfortune?

The episode where she got sick and her charm broke the weather went to complete shit. This time we see her leaving the charm behind and suddenly a thunderstorm shows up. Is there some subtle lore this show has that's flying over my head?
>>
>>142350337
She's probably not even that sickly, her misfortune is like that. When she describes her impact as souring the mood for others, what is really happening is that her own attitude about herself is causing that impact. In a sense, she is the opposite of Anne. Her misfortune is her own mindset, as opposed to actually being entirely happy yet an enemy of fate. When you look at things this way, it's likely that most of her pain is essentially psychosomatic.

You gotta think it through! You can learn to be happy here, and learn to live properly from the 2D scriptures, but you have to transform yourself too. In your heart, you have to become 2D, and then you're ready to find happiness out there. Even though it might seem like you're alone, the rest of us are there too. The reason we commune through the 2D world is so that we can find each other in the 3D hellscape.

That's what it means to be friends.

Oh god now I realized why I'm always uncomfortable with this show. It's the fucking dates. It's such a simple and unassuming thing to put in but that therein lies the heartbreak.

Usually these shows have that very distinct vacuum where everybody is in highschool forever. I'm not saying this show doesn't have that but it's the fact that they tell you the dates which gets me. There's a very clear and concrete passage of time that's just slowly counting down to inevitable graduation. Fortunately, it won't come to that yet but it's that very bittersweet looming idea of them separating at the end that's always stuck in the back of my head because the fucking dates constantly remind me of that.

But the happiness training is clearly leading to the idea that their misfortunes are irrelevant to their happiness as long as they have each other. The logical end point, or graduation, is their realization of this idea so that they continue to be together after high school. This is a healing anime. THE healing anime.

>>142352228
I think the principle is sound, but it can't be taken too literally since even in this episode you have an example of multiple days passing. But she's treating them like she would treat her own students if they acted that way, she doesn't like the idea of setting a different standard
>>
>>142354559
That's what makes it so brilliant. The audience can instantly empathize with her because her view is essentially what the world says is correct. We've been treated to this special view of the girls, and then suddenly here comes an entirely different lens that completely alters the tone of the show. Understanding it that way is what makes Hibari's shame resonate with the audience. Then the compassion of her friends snaps us right back into the other way of viewing things.

It fucking blows my mind what just happened in that episode. It fucking blows my mind week after week. It feels like I was born just to watch this show.
>>
>>142354923
>Understanding it that way is what makes Hibari's shame resonate with the audience.

I definitely see that aspect. In the show you're used to seeing Hibari talk about how unfortunate and ashamed of herself she is, but this is the first time we see how that looks from an outside perspective.

It also helps that her situation is not all that different from what is commonly suffered by some more socially awkward/introverted people. When you fuck up you're so ashamed of yourself but it just ends up being because you're too self-conscious of yourself and worried about what others will think of you. You can really tell Hibari suffers from severe low self esteem from this episode. Part, if not most, of that probably stems from the cognitive dissonance of loving someone so unattainable and, for lack of a better word, odd. She's told by society that she can't love a sign, and gets ostracized by her friends for something that is so personal to her.

I might be reading too much into this but Hibari's character definitely resonates with me.
>>
>>142354895
No I'd say she was a bit biased towards them, she already had the opinion that they were worth nothing without having evaluated them because the Class 7s that came before them were shit so she thinks the classes to come will also be shit, well they are but that's beside the point.

Not possible. I think it is pretty clear by now that this is the deepest series ever made.

>>142355382
Ren is essentially in tune with the comfy nature of the setting itself. Can you imagine trying to stay awake in that 2D world? Only the prospect of fun (or friends in need) can arouse her.
>>
>>142355253
This honestly makes me wonder if Hibari will continue to pursue that delusional love of hers.

She says she fell in love with the sign because of its unwavering dedication to its duty -- to smile through sun, snow and rain. But isn't that love just a consequence of her own longing to be more confident and unashamed of herself? I wouldn't be surprised if she still didn't get friends during middle school even without the sign love bullying.

Her actual misfortune isn't tragic love but shame in one's self.
>>
>>142355500
I love how Anne explains it so casually as seeing her change in the locker room. She has this strange dichotomy of being a moeblob and also the most realistic character. It's the same with her explanation for animals attacking her because they're frightened. The show presents these fantastical beasts with malicious intent, but her rationalization for it makes perfect sense.

>>142355540
>This honestly makes me wonder if Hibari will continue to pursue that delusional love of hers.
Naw mang, the end card proves it. He is the first love that makes her capable of loving her true fated one.

>final chapter
>graduation
>Hibari is selected to give a speech
>"I learned...FRIENDSHIP...and now I have the strength to say, I was in love with a sign!"
>various encouraging reaction shots, everyone already knew
>last panel is a collection of pictures in a class scrapbook including the picture of sign-kun from Hibari's wallet
>>
>>142355540

In a way you can still call it tragic love.
After all, there's nothing more tragic than not being able to love yourself.

If you're so smart /a/ then explain to me the more outlandish misfortunes like Hibiki, Ren, and Hanako.
>>
>>142350337
Heroes don't die.
>>
>>142356176
Hibiki's misfortune is being a tsundere, because Ren only falls for her dere side while Hibiki thinks she has to be tsun in order to stay by Ren's side. Essentially, her own attitude is what prevents her love from being fulfilled. That was the whole point of the rose gate episode.

Ren is a complete slacker uninterested in things that don't interest her.

Anne isn't unfortunate at all. She is the happiest creature in the universe, but everyone else perceives the events surrounding her as misfortune. Remember, she cried out LUCKY during the combination technique. She sees herself as the luckiest person because she has the best friends and gets to meet the most cute animals and make the most beautiful memories. (Ren's HAPPY signified her peak pleasure due to being on a fun adventure with her friends. Botan's MIRACLE was her belief that it was a miracle she was able to participate. Hibari's LOVE is the strongest thing she could think of, and Hibiki equated the word love to her stance on love being to ATTACK.)
>>
>>142356176

none of them are unfortunate

they get to go to the goat school and be happy and make friends
>>
>>142356492
And in case anyone wasn't satisfied by my explanation for Hibiki, wrap your mind around this...She gets lost. She knows what way to go (how to be so that Ren loves her) but can't go in the right direction (maintains a tsun front).

I'm telling you, deepest lore.
>>
>>142356492
>Anne isn't unfortunate at all.
She is unfortunate, it's just that she doesn't know she's unfortunate. She's thinks it's normal that cats bite you when you try to pet them, she's thinks it's normal that vending machines are akin to roulettes, etc. She doesn't get sad about it because she thinks it's just what happens in a normal daily life, she does however get sad if something she knows as normal goes bad like a bunch of niggers stealing her lunch and such so we know that she isn't just being genki in the face of despair. She truly believes she's lead a happy and lucky life simply because she doesn't know any better to the point that other people think it's abnormal. Anne is simply a personified version of "Ignorance is bliss."
>>
>>142356674
>>142356492
I'd say Hibiki's misfortune is more of being prideful. It's that unfaltering trust in herself and her self-perpetuating overconfidence that's always her undoing. In the same way a stereotypical scenario of a man not asking directions plays out, Hibiki herself settles on her own path without paying heed to any form of dissenting opinion or even legitimate help to her predicament. Which of course leads to her getting lost.

That little psychological mark Ren left on her during childhood is what also further reinforces that confidence. As much as she puts trust in herself, she also puts the same trust towards Ren which is why she always subconsciously heads toward their old kindergarten. She knows, trusts more specifically, that Ren will always be there.

Ironically, as you have already stated, despite that overflowing confidence Hibiki herself spills all her spaghetti when Ren is involved. Ren both enables and inhibits Hibiki's haughtiness.

>>

>>
>>142357425
>>142357019
It's not really deep, you're just putting in words what has been shown and implied.

This show isn't anything particularly special, the characters aren't cardboard cutouts though, and the author obviously put some time in figuring out why they act the way they do.
>>
>>142357551

>It's not really deep, you're just putting in words what has been shown and implied.

welcome to every deep piece of media
>>
>>142356824
None of that is unfortunate. Everything that happens to her (other than things which completely disregard common sense such as her rapid regeneration from animal attacks) is just a poor result of probability. She knows that, but everyone else treats it as a supernatural occurrence. Her misfortune only exists in the eyes of outside observers. Sort of. There is basically a dual layer effect that can achieved by stripping away the logic of the show itself. One way to think of it would be as the perspectives of the two teachers. For one, life is like a D&D game wherein those girls received loaded dice. For the other, they're just dumb and clumsy in entirely human ways.

>>142356985
Pride might be a better way to put it, but I think it centers more around her relationship to Ren than anything else. After all, that is the most important thing to her. Plus, all of her other failings are actually successes. Getting lost causes Ren to find her. Getting hurt causes Ren to carry her. The food she made wasn't good, but it was 100% in tune to both her and Ren. The rain charm she made was almost the best, but only because Ren turning Timothy into one was fucking amazing. All of her prideful acts work out, even if it isn't in the way she declared it should.

>>142357378
>>142357430
Or Botan already has a love interest, which seems to protect Hibari from being charmed. The teachers can get all the release they need from Timothy. It's a mechanical rabbit whose sole mission is to aid girls; you do the math.
>>
>>142357603
Which means nothing is really deep
>>
>>142357635

well it means that the depth of something is dependent upon what we impose upon it

>>
>>142357019
Nah. Most of the observations actually aren't that deep, it's just that the character's failings resonate so well with anons that they're obviously going to be more articulate when it comes to discussion.

>>142358309
As long as they fap to the teachers it's okay.
>>
In the end though the purpose of the class isn't to remove the sources of their misfortune, it's to make them happy, which means that despite their problems and faults they need to learn to love themselves.

Sensei is telling them through all these activities that they're not alone, that they have other people that are just as fucked as they are, and if they can become friends with their classmates they can learn to love themselves too. Anne even says it in this episode, Hibari's always there to help her and Botan, so now it's time for them to cover for Hibari.

These people have problems that they cannot overcome through strength of will or self-improvement. Botan will always be in poor health, just like her mother. Anne is just as, and possibly even more, clumsy than her mother. Hibari is in love with something unattainable. They cannot escape these aspects of themselves, and through their lives they have regarded them as faults. It is only when they are able to see that there are other people like them that they can see past their self perceived faults and learn to love themselves for who they are.
