It lost the tension in it's plot after their meeting place burned down. Mangaka had no idea how to further the relationships, did a traditional 'is a monster girl' cannot be loved relationship, with best girl winning but the fight and EVERYTHING remotely about it between the time skip.
Family had a lot of plot conveniences since Grandpa's alzhamirs was a convenient excuse without putting more mystery on the research side of things.
Tldr: I dunno wat the anime was like, but the manga 2nd half was pretty shit.
