I've just finished it and I can't understand why is it considered "a hidden gem". I had seen Ergo Proxy and Serial Experiments Lain before. Don't get me wrong, I'm not stupid, I understanded the show. All this inevitable end concept is pretty sweet, but is it really the case when i have to suffer as much as characters by being forced to sit through all the boring suff (which is like, 80% of it)? Also: why did the protagonist lose his limbs? I can't recollect that.
>>
It is the best anime ever made.
>>
How can you say you understand the show if you don't even remember it? Also, when you say that you "understand" a work of art and then proceed to pick a single thought or moment from it as the entirety of its worth, it's pretty clear that you are full of shit.
>>
>>142243369
It is awesome at being what it is (which many people won't like, I admit). But it actually is art. I honestly can't conceive hoe they hoped to get the production money back.

By fucking whom? It's very well-known.

You're pretty fucking stupid.

I dont personally think it was all that boring.
I can understand the first 10 episodes being a little to slow, but Yoshii and the surface episodes made up for it.
While it's one of my personal favorites i can understand how people would find it boring, not everyone is autistic enough to sit trough 10 minutes of silence per episode.
For me its about the atmosphere, the art style, the soundtrack and setting all working together so well.

>why did the protagonist lose his limbs?
He won a prostitute from a fighting match, and he punches her when she tried to stab his eye. And get punished by the Mob guys fot it

It's right up there with the other gods of anime such as NGE, Lain, and LotGH. Personally it is my 2nd favorite anime behind LotGH but you could make a strong argument for it being the best.

It is 100% the best anime of the 21st century though, there is definitely no doubt about that.

yep. I fell in love with Hopper after watching Texhnolyze. His work also influenced The Road To Perdition with Tom Hanks too.

The entire overworld is inspired by his paintings.
And Hopper is bitching man, I mostly dislike American painters but Hopper is in my top 5 probably.

>He won a prostitute from a fighting match
I'm fairly certain he went into the match to win money for food. The underground fighting ring was being run by the mob and the mob lady was watching the match. He caught her eye and she was super into him so she wouldn't pay him unless he had sex with her.

I wouldn't say it was boring, but with the exception of the last two episodes, it was underwhelming. It's done in a slow and le artsy way, but never actually justifies it with something. It's a vanilla story. I liked it when I watched it. Then I forgot most of it and don't really care. There's little to invest in and beyond a few simple concepts and yes ideas show presents are generally very simple, sometimes even naive, there's nothing to get out of it. It could've easily been made into a 12 episode anime without losing anything. Lain is better. Ghost Hound, too. And Tamers even. Not a bad show, just okay.

Oh, and Ergo Proxy fits with these only aestetically. It's a completely different thing otherwise.
>>

the pacing is god tier. it's realistic and very necessary. the best episodes of the series are from the first ten. the last two episodes are the weakest although they were great too.

Oh great, one of those shows that touches on a "mature element" but doesn't actually have any worth in its story or characters.

But because it explores a "theme" every criticism of the inner workings of the series can be thrown out the window.

Lain, this, Eva, whatever, are all a skeleton of an anime. No meat on the bones besides a "theme".

Stop being so desperate to defend it. they clearly don't have any eye for what makes Hopper work. I mean, to separate it from the thoroughly American context alone should be proof enough. It's nice that they tried and I doubt they actually did it to expect to win any 'reference points' with otaku, but it's frankly embarrassing more than anything

Yes, and they're making thousands of them with the intention that each will be shown briefly as part of the show. No one intended for that shot to be a better painting than Hopper's.

>>
>>142244716

THIS.

The show has two main points -- 1) as the anon said 'lack of meaning' -- or 'absurdism' -- think of Camus' - 'The Stranger'. 2) fatalism, don't forget that Ran told Ichise how the world would end. It was up to Ichise to realize it before fate made it happen. The real question is, if Ichise had taken her clairvoyance seriously, would he have been able to stop the eventual downward spiral, or affect some sort of greater change for himself, Ran, Lux, etc....
>>
It's impressive how they make the life they all live in so shit but you still get sad when they die, even if you don't really know them. The ending was well sad man :(
>>
>>142245777
>the thoroughly American context
Would you mind elaborating on this one? I've never found Hopper's works to be that closely connected to a single country. I guess maybe they've become more universal as time has passed, or it's just the perspective of non-americans.
>>
>>142246279
He basically raped him once. She does it again, but the next time is a little sweeter to watch and not so creepy.
>>
>>142246282
Yeh man, Camus was what I was referencing as well. I see the fatalism as the eventual and unavoidable death of absolutely everyone. I mean her prediction of him dyeing alone isn't really that magical, everyone dies alone.
>>
>>142244099
>gods of anime
>Lain, and LotGH

>>
>>142246282
1) Absurdism and fatalism are retarded
2) There's no real question because show made it obvious it was unavoidable

So really the only reason Texhnolyze gets praised instead of called out for being redditor's first philosophy is because it's Japanese so it's ok.

Ran a cute, though.
>>
>>142245776
but the theme is the only important part of a story
>>
>>142246304
If all the characters were monsters and killers it would be different. But the people like Ran, Doc, and Onishi try to help and are kind at heart. That's why it's hard to watch them die.
>>
>>142243369
It's fucking shit. Now go and fucking kill yourself.
>>
>>142246567
>Absurdism and fatalism are retarded
Good job backing up that statement (you are retarded)

Point 2, I agree.

A lot of things are Japanese and they don't get praised. Ran is very cute even in comparison to moe shows (again a testament to the show).
>>
The only reason this series keeps getting dragged up is the ABe designs and the association with Lain and Haibane Renmei, when it would be fairer to put Niea_7 with those two.

I wonder what exactly Onishi was to blame for when it comes to what happened to his wife. Yoshii said it was Onishi's fault his wife became like she did, though Yoshii never said anything beyond that (it was during the scene were they fight each other). Onishi obviously regretted what had happened to his wife and stubbornly wouldn't let himself happiness by becoming closer to the secretary. I really liked the secretary, her final scene was the one that had the biggest impact on me.

>>142243745
He won a prostitute from a fighting match, and he punches her when she tried to stab his eye. And get punished by the Mob guys fot it

I think that the "prostitute" you're referring to was probably the wife of the gang's leader. What Ichise wins is most likely money, as that is what seems to be what the woman carries to him in an envelope while he's taking a shower. The intimacy of the scene implies that they're familiar with each other. Her going in while he showers (therefore him being "vulnerable") and being all intimate with him while he acts indifferently, implies she has some power over him. The woman doesn't let him grab the money she brought for him, as he first has to do what she wishes, which is pleasuring her. Ichise is clearly indifferent during the sex untill she goes too far. The leader was the one most likely watching and it was implied that he enjoys watching things like that, at least that's my interpretation of it. He did leave, probably got bored as this was something he probably watched regularly.
On second thought it might as well have been a precious prostitute to the leader, as her getting hurt was enough for them to chop two limbs off of Ichise. Her delivering the money implies she was trusted enough to do so, but she probably wouldn't dare to steal it if she was a prostitute either way. I'm leaning towards her being the wife of the leader of the gang.

I don't even know where to begin. His choice of landscape bleed american, especially in his urban paintings. His paintings resonate because they also engage in universal themes like loneliness, solitude, alienation, etc., and not just for its visual explorations of america, but even those are inherently American topics, both in their selection and in the way he approaches them. He also is strongly within a lineage of other American painters from the period. To most, Hopper is as fundamentally capital A American in painting as Eggleston is in photography

And if you just out the window here >>142244256
you can see the contrast from Hopper's very distinct north-eastern factory/warehouse & water tower (to me it strongly evokes New England or Boston) to texhnolyze's generic italianesque "european/western" landscape (eg gunslinger girls) and flowers - even the interior color scheme alternatively manages to evoke northeastern america for hopper, and western europe (or anime's generic interpretation of it) for texhnolyze.
>>
>>142247091
Wasn't it implied that she lost her mind before the start of the series? I think that Onishi should have tried to be closer to his wife in her time of need instead of going for the secretary, but I'd understand. I thought the scene were he cleans up his wife after Yoshii kills her was both sad and beautiful in a way.

Thanks for that, I think I see how one can view those as inherently American, though I wouldn't think of it myself. To me his paintings are, abridgely, set somwhere, as in their location never really mattered to me. As for Texhnolyze, I think they were going for generic landscape and architecture that can, in this day and age, be seen everywhere in order to avoid tying Lux and the surface world to a specific location.

>Wasn't it implied that she lost her mind before the start of the series?

Yes, I think what lead to her losing her mind most likely had to do with Onishi being able to hear the voice of the "city". His position as the leader of the gang most likely meant he wasn't spending much time with her. The nail in the coffin was that he was listening to the voice of the "city", as by in doing so he neglected her even more. Him talking with "someone" she couldn't about things she didn't know about, she must've felt her husband had turned his back against her and that he no longer loved her. From her perspective it might've as well have been a woman he was talking to who he loved more than his wife.
