This is the first proper love triangles we've had since EVOL and we have Macross precedent for generally how things go. Kaname is going to sing him the pineapple song and then he'll die.
There are very nice moments with Freyja and Messer - aces and die young, Kaname and Mirage - lots of people are better than them in their profession.

1. It's a feel good triangle to make the viewers "look for" the characters. Nobody is really attached to Mirage.
2. That.
3. Mirage admires Hayate. Feelings of admiration only get you not far in triangles.
4. The draft was about male pilots resonating with their female singer partners. No female pilots. They competed with each other and then team up. It was closer to Plus. So the triangle was probably Hayate prototype/Freyja prototype/some Aerial Knight Prototype (before they created the Aerial Knights concept, whoever is Hayate's rival). The pilot/singer resonance was kind of fundamental.

Mirage is a Jenius who has a famous family behind her. She only needs to get over her issues and fly. Her feelings for Hayate are maybe admiration, which all the loser girls in triangles get. Sure, she's boring, but so what? It's not like they try for her to be a face who would sell many merch.
Freyja is alone in the world, orphaned who saw her house burn down in a civil war, considered a traitor by her people, a spy by some, half of lifestime ran out, and she's the main female character with the biggest fanbase and the one literally made to be the heroine since the draft.
In a show where living your life the fullest and make every day precious is one of the main themes. Hayate ending up with Mirage wouldn't make sense. She feels added as filler.

I think they're going allout with the dogfighting because there has not been a series that solely focused on the "they are jets" aspect since Plus. When they fought the Vajra in Frontier, they mainly used Battroid. When Basara sang, he was pretty much always in Battroid. He even had to get an episode to learn how to use Gerwalk which meant he wasn't using Gerwalk for like a third of the series
