Tanaka is pretty fucking gay in all his novels, there's a reason Arslan's original designs looked like what they did.
It just wasn't considered gay at the time, but man's romance or some bullshit playing semantics. I don't get it either, but it was more 'acceptable' so to speak.
I mean fuck people today on /a/ still defend Arslan designs as manly when fucking FMA Arslan S2 looks like he could bench OVA Arslan three times over even with that baby face. It's just metric shit ton of nostalgia and denial.
