Nisio kind of flubbed up on that part, since Hanekawa took actions to try to bring her and Araragi closer as friend, and Gahara (and the rest of their class) assumed they were dating. Gahara even admitted she didn't care and would have tried to steal him away from her when they spoke candidly in White's epilogue.
About the only mistake she made was not asking him to go out with her immediately upon becoming friends, which is altogether strange to do before you know someone. Technically, establishing a relationship before pursuing romance is the smarter move.
Even the not asking for help thing was answered for us in White. She shut off her heart after past friends shunned her for sharing about her home life. She readily told people and even invited friends over, which was when they shunned her.

The only reason we didn't see Hanekawa's was because she got it cut by Araragi in Tsubasa Song, which wasn't animated. That was pretty dramatic if you got the subtlety of the conversation.
