The thing was only adopted by so few because it's completely impractical. It was designed to be used against lightly armored targets, but it's a side arm. Those aren't issued to anyone as it is. .50 beowolf is a much better idea, and all it requires is popping two pins to change from 5.56mm to .50 Beo.
It's not because it's some monster handgun. It's mildly unpleasant to shoot, but it's nothing compared to a hot hunting load from a .500S&W, a gun with no cyclic parts and about the same weight.
