Why?
>>
Because the people who buy anime don't buy anything else.
>>
>buying DVDs
What year are you from?
>>
Because otaku, that's why.
>>
>niche market show aired on tv
>movie shown in theaters that huge numbers of people pay to watch
>>
Because Monogatari is actually worth it.
>>
Movies make the majority of their money on ticket sales and merchandise, anime has to cover their budget mostly through dvd sales there is also far less people buying the dvds and so their price have to be higher.

welcome to a niche hobby

Although the left side is bullshit, the right side had years between each film's release. The value of a movie as time passes generally goes down a shit ton. Not that great of a comparison.
>>
>>141548444
$37? Not when it came out that's for sure.
But probably a big part is that they already sold a bunch of individual copies already and they don't need to make any more off of the LOTR series, but it's just another way they can.
Anime however has a backbone made of blu-ray sales and the studios depend on it just to survival.
LOTR also has sets of video games and probably by now a tv series or some shit, and way more merch than gatari, all for it's much much larger fanbase to eat up with much less thought as to what they're buying.

Which of these made the greater profit?

>>

iirc the budget on that futurama knock off on the left was because of the voice actors and not because of the animation itself
>>
>>141548444
>Back in the dawn of the home video business, the industry was constructed in a way where "niche" releases were only meant to sell a few thousand copies, mostly to video rental shops. Prices were high (typically $89.95 in America), but video shops benefited from having a wide and semi-exclusive selection of movies that normal people would never pay for. At those prices, only a few thousand sales could mean over a million dollars of revenue. Initially, video industry people didn't think there was much of a market in selling to collectors.

>But the fans proved them wrong. Otaku of all kinds (not just anime fans) started buying the videotapes and laserdiscs, and they bought them at those high prices that were intended just for video stores. There was no reason to lower it. In fact, there were a few experiments to drop the price to a more affordable amount, but that usually resulted in a slight increase in sales -- not enough to make up for the drop in revenue.

tl;dr blame the otakus whose demand enforced rental pricing for all consumers

Same reason left has a fuckton of detailed figures, porn, and other merchandise while right gets kiddy Jaks Pascific toys. One is for otaku, the other is for normies.

>>141554270
This right here. There simply isn't the economics of scale. There are only so many buyers willing to spend money. If someone is willing to spend, you might as well up the price.
>>
Movies are expected to recoup their investments when they air, they can afford to knock down the prices a bit. Also, that is a movie series that aired more than 10 years ago. That box is heavily discounted and probably would've cost 10 times that amount back then.
>>
>>141554374
