I thought it was handled fine in the web novel. You get a lot of hints in the story that something is not right with Subaru. As the story goes on, Subaru'sself hatredonly builds up. This eventually leads up to chapter 25 of Arc 3 where Subaruloses Emilia's trust and support.Things only get worse and eventually, we see him break completely in chapter 52 of the third arc. Appropriately called "From Zero", in this chapter, it's revealedhow badly Subaru dislikes himself. Unable to deal with Rem's unwavering trust in him, Subaru let's loose all of the negative feelings he ever felt towards himself. It's only when he's at his absolute lowest the reader is finally shown Subaru's true personality. Rem's reaction to Subaru's rant and the ensuing conversation is probably one of my favorite scenes in the series.
