Director hated it, put in a bunch of Yakuza crap that didn't help the plot, made up his own antagonists, plus it was years before the series was finishing.
Manga was absolutely incredible though. Hox scanlating Bokurano and Vinland Saga was /a/'s true golden age.

Yeah it completely lost its tone. Its like they forgot that they were going to die or something. This entire series should have been one long tearjerker where you see the kids' families and friends and siblings mourn their eventual deaths, and where they try to do the best with what's left of the 2 weeks or so the cast has to live, but that feeling isn't there. Plus eliminating the families of the kids who died from the plot after their deaths was such a stupid idea.
More could have been done with the other robots they were fighting too. I liked that one episode where the robot did not want to destroy the buildings and we were left wondering why. Plus the entire subplot of the "gods" or whoever was culling off these universes felt unfinished.

It was better in the anime from Maki's reaction, I think. It might have been someone different in the manga, but it definitely didn't have the kind of buildup, and the soundtrack helped a lot too. She's the only one I remember the name of.
The anime was shit, read the manga. Same thing happened with Narutaru. Most of Kitoh's works aren't really suitable for anime.
