To be honest, I've never thought about it. Probably because the end results is the thing that matters, which requires willpower and not just feelings. It is often hard to tell when admiration or respect turns to like which then turns to love. Out of the shows that I've watched, the most common route is that a mc likes a girl/boy whom he builds/already has established a relationship with that developes into love. It's most common that male mcs show interest first, so I guess I'd prefer boys liking girls first.

After watching many romance animes, I've come to the conclusion that the best romance isn't to be found in romance animes but instead series where the romance is a side plot that builds up over the course of the adventure.
Case in point is a good one. Also Tristeping/Eva from Wakfu. Rock/Revy from Black Lagoon is amazing as well though it remains to be seen where that goes.
The west doesn't really do romance as a main plot in cartoons and Japan is pretty fucking retarded when they do, so romance anime are often just a buttfuck mess of misunderstandings and drama for no reason.

This. Romance might be an important plot, but it has to still be a side plot. For example, Spice and Wolf wouldn't be so good without the economics. One of the reasons for this is that you don't need to come up with pointless sexual tension and misunderstandings to keep the series going, you can even keep going after the couple got together.
