How does the movie compare to the OVAs of Time of Eve?
>>
>>141196350
The movie is almost exactly the same as the OVAs, but with a really smooth transition between episodes. I think there are a handful more scenes in the movie, but you're not missing out on too much watching one or the other.
>>
>>141196312
Easily the most underrated Ghibli film. People tend to favor the likes of Spirited Away and Mononoke, but I honestly think that Kiki, Whisper of the heart and the studio's more personal/less ambitious works are better.
>>
>>141195662
Man that's a good movie.
>>
>>141196230
It hits close to home, and it gives me different feels each time I watch it
>>
>>141196230
The MC was too embarrassed to write the girl he was in love with, and over time, that was compounded with the guilt of not having contacted her, but he never got over her, and he let that remain a huge a regret for him that stopped him from ever trying for another relationship.
Even at the end, when he sees her across the train tracks, he still thinks maybe this is his second chance.
And even we (or at least I) as the audience believe (or at least want to) that even though she's getting married, maybe something is going to happen.
But she gives zero fucks, doesn't even talk to him, because she's completely over him and she can tell that he isn't.

It's a parable about A) putting yourself out there, or if that fails, then B) getting over it.

I mean, 5cm is pretty hit-or-miss.
Most people either think it's a fantastic vignette or it's empty as fuck.

What do you think of the ending of Only Yesterday?
I loved everything up the ending, but I felt like the last few minutes kind of betrayed the rest of the movie, which was about growing up.
Yeah, it was partly about rediscovering her childhood, but I felt like it was also about how she had learned from her past, and her final decision was very much a return to her childlike innocence.

I mean, her plan was "okay, so I'm considering moving out here, let me go back to the city and think it over", and then she suddenly decides, "hey fuck it let's just do it right now."

Sorry, it's just that I haven't seen anyone mention Omoide Poroporo in so long here.

If that was the intention, why would they bother to show her in scenes that are independent of his presence?
If what you're saying is true, I think it would have worked better to only show her at the train crossing, instead of including her preparing for her wedding and then going out for a walk.
>>
>>141197017
This is exactly how I took it. It's a don't take things for granted story. I think it was done quite well overall and really enjoy it. A lot of people just get salty over."bad endings".
>>
>>141197218
I mean, I do think he has a point, in that the plot feels like it just gets dropped in the end.
I kind of just hand-wave it and sweep it under the rug by saying, "well yeah, that's part of the message of not taking things for granted", even though I don't think that was really the intention.
>>
>>141196515
I just gave a few examples to get my point across. Only Yesterday is also among my favorite Ghibli films and it indeed fits in the category that I described.
>>
>>141197278

It was conceived through fanservice, took half an hour to really start, and turned a conclusive ending to a series into a cliffhanger.

But Rebellion Story still has some of my favorite uses of animation and symbolism that I've seen in a film.

It's threads like these that make me take a step back and appreciate the richness of the medium. There always seems to be one more film, series, OVA, or short that's worth viewing and recommending.

The library of worthy manga is even more staggering, doubtless.

I like the coming of age aspect of the story. It has magical aspects to it, but if you take that away the movie turns into just a girl coming into terms with her own insecurities and trying to establish a new life in a unknown town. Some people find it to be rather plain, but that's exactly what makes it great to me because it seems genuine and not something overly dramatized, which is the same reason why I love Whisper of the Heart, both of these films have drama, however I view them as being more genuine and honest dramas than most anime or live action films out there. To put it simple, most of the things that Kiki got through in the film are simple and in a way, rather ordinary, but at the same time they're conveyed in such a relatable and honest way that I can't help but feel really immersed in the whole thing.

I also really love the comfy but at the same time motivational atmosphere that the movie has. It's rather difficult to convey in words, but I always get filled with tenderness, joy and inspiration when I watch this movie for some reason.

That's what it excelled at. It's slow and quiet with barely any dialogue, but it builds on this oppressively lonely atmosphere underneath it all.

It's the feeling of exploring a dead world where the only people who are left don't even know who they are anymore.

You must really hate anime then. One of the biggest differences between anime and western animation is that the first generally takes itself much more seriously, while the later doesn't have any ambition aside from cheap jokes and random humor.

I'm not criticizing the movie for not giving more screen time to Haruhi, I understand that was the point and I know it actually benefits from the lack of her. However, maybe I can't help but get a little frustrated when I rewatch it because that movie will most likely be the last anime interaction that we're going to get from the series and it barely shows the main star of it. Maybe if we got a S3 I wouldn't have this weird feeling of ''I want more Haruhi even though the point of the whole thing is Haruhi disappearing''

I agree with most of your points though.

Akira. Imagine being hopeless addicted to animation in your late teens (late 80s/early 90s), but all you see is shit in America. Then you get this 3-4th gen VHS copy (barely watchable) of an animated movie that actually has mature subject matter and a serious story. After that, there was never any going back.

Wasn't until several years later did I get to see my next film at a rental store called "Warriors of the Wind". Rented the fuck out of it.

I don't see why it is bothering you.

Truth remains the same no matter what you are. Life in the country side is better, there is no reason for her not to return here.

Being grown up does not really mean anything.

It was a very lucid decision, why cope with a superficial and sad life in the city if happiness and plenitude resides in the countryside.

I feel like you are making the mistake of associating "being grown up" (which does not mean much in the first place) and having tolerate the absurdity of day to day life.

Going to a work you don't like so that you can live, why not grow up your own food and be happy.

I feel like the part about fractions was a reflexion about the meaning of abstract concept and how accepting them can create a false state of understanding, just so that you can "fit in".

She said screw that, and I agree with her choice.

And I love Omoide Poro Poro too by the way great movie.

Perfect Blue is also up there.

Well I did pretend to be retarted because the question is dumb in the first place.

They made a decision to make an animated movie, they made the decision to have a female lead.

Why did they they make this shot or this shot, why is there this sound effect at this particular frame?

Why do you make a painting of a scene instead of using your camera?

Animation has intrinsic qualities and they decided to go for this medium. That is all, the rest is your own interpretation.

When you see >pic related you don't ask why not just take a photo.

There you go "pal"

The unapologetic bittersweetness the film have. A crucial poignant tale of the reality of life and friendship. The characters have a certain passivity to them, they could have changed their lives if they initially acted differently.

After the protagonist wrote a confessional love letter, he lost it, and when he meet with that friend from childhood a few years later and kissed. He didn't reciprocate because he thought the loss of the letter signified something.

Then, there were the tomboy, who fell in love the protagonist during high school and couldn't articulate how she felt so she opted to walk home with him until she realized he were looking elsewhere and not at her, she decided she'll always love him despite the unrequited love.

Years, later protagonist meet with the childhood friend albeit indirectly near the train tracks, didn't speak a word and only glanced at her while the train passed and obscured their vision of the other.

If you look pass the romance, it's about loneliness, nobody found it. They resigned themselves to what they perceived were right for themselves or the other, if they communicated their sentiments sincerely, maybe the outcome could've turned out different.

The greatness in Spirited Away is in it's setting.
Ghibli is usually really good with that, but in that movie they went a step up. I, personally, have never watched anything better than SP regarding it
Everything feels utterly alive, and the bathhouse is presented in a way that if you were to be left alone in there you would know how to walk around it.
It's just a complex building showed in the best way possible with colorful and vibrant characters. Just like a japanese folk-tale.

When I think about my favorite anime "film," a lot of no-brainers come to mind.

I really love Jin-Roh. The first time I watched it I thought it was kinda cool but often boring. That's going into it expecting an action movie, though.

I ended up watching it two, three, probably four times over the years, and I ended up liking it more and more each time. Totally opposite of what I experience with a lot of contemporary live action movies, which are fun the first time around but a total bore if you watch it again. Really helps that the movie is visual eye-candy in a really non-flamboyant way.

This always seems like a silly question. For one, why is live-action the default? For another, if you're a fucking animator/animation director, obviously you're going to be biased towards making an animated movie. The question would only really make sense if the creator was from a live-action background and decided to cross over.

>>
>>141223847
It's a weird delusion I've been seeing over the past few months or so, where people seem to think animation has to justify itself or "take advantage of the medium" as they say. I can see where that mindset comes from but jeez it's a dumb one.

Patlabor 2 is more interesting compared to the rest of Patlabor because of how he basically turns it into proto-GitS in terms of tone and characters. It's the odd one out, or at least it would be if the third movie didn't exist.
>>
>>141223984
>take advantage of the medium
And where did the idea that putting fantasy elements at everything is the same as taking advantage of the medium?I can put fantasy elements and unrealistic stuff in live-action movies as well, I mean, capeshit is one of the most popular genres of live-action movies these days and they're nothing more than bad shonens really. Hell, some of the most popular films of all time, like Harry Potter and Stars wars are completly unrealistic, and by that anon's logic ''there's no reason to make them live-action''.

So it's not that the idea of taking advantage of the medium is silly, just that these anons have no fucking idea what this statement means in the first place and like to repeat it just because it makes them feel smart.
