The thing about Natsuki is that she's actually hiding a lot of things from us that we don't find out about until season 2.
It wasn't actually Kumiko that turned her life around, it was Nozomi, whom we'll see in the second season. What Kumiko did was she reminded Natsuki about the whole reason she started playing the euphonium in the first place, which was funny because Asuka kind of forced her into it.
I'll leave out the bigger details for you to find out later butbasically Nozomi is to Natsuki as Reina is to Kumiko. But the biggest difference is that Natsuki didn't stand up for Nozomi during last year's incident while Kumiko stood up for Reina. So Natsuki feels guilty about it the entire time until Kumiko asked her to play with them which got her back in the mood.
The second season deals with Natsuki trying to get Nozomi back into the club even if it means turning against Asuka and the others.
