It started like what could turn into a fun mix between One Piece and Full Metal. In which the character is already more or less a small legend and part of a wide and powerful organization.
Then it simply failed to pick up. Mist gun was wasted, Phantom lord was too weak. You can say it terminally went to shit in edolas but the tower arc was also pretty bad.
Now its just a fast, formulaic campy pace with villain of the week, banal plot, bland designs, rushed art and no tension

Mashima is a big picture kind of guy when it comes to making up a plot and also hes not very good with creating suspense. As a result FT is too long winded and convoluted to follow.

Then again that entire arc sucked dick. Having a tournament arc when you can't write a decent fight to save your life is a terrible idea.
How did it get so popular in the first place? The big 3 all had at least one really solid arc to hook fans in the first place (Chuunin exams/Soul Society/Alabasta). But even the best Fairy Tail arc was just on par with stuff like Naruto's Rescue Gaara arc.

Lucy is honestly the only one of the original four I tolerate. Gray is a tremendous faggot for not fucking Juvia non-stop. Natsu is both the most generic and unlikable shonen protagonist I've seen in a long time. Erza's god tier fanservice doesn't prevent her from embodying the worst things of FT
Lucy though has even better fanservice, actually improves and learns, is a nice person but not a doormat, and could at this point create her own harem of Virgo, Aries, Flare and Brandish.
