Aside from Aniplex-kun, it's mainly because people are really attached to the Honey & Clover anime - for good reason, it was fantastic - and since they didn't announce the studio until a while after the anime announcement, a lot of people were assuming Kasai and JC Staff would be doing this as well, so there was a lot of backlash when it turned out it wasn't them.

You're not looking close enough. The line art is so out of place with the roughness of the lines in the bg, the colors don't really match, the lighting is poorly done (part of photography, like >>141070711 said). Actually that's a very good example of why lighting effects take part in photography. If you look at the girl on the far left, you can see that the sunlight behind her is so strong that it bleaches the buildings in the background, while her face doesn't have a hint of that. The bloom from the bg should also cover a bit of the girl, because that's how bloom works, but it doesn't do that here, which is what makes her look out of place. You see in that image of Reina that the bloom from the bg does extend to Reina, like it should, which makes her blend with the background better. Here's a screenshot with heavy lighting effects from Hibike. The characters don't look out of place because the same filters that are applied to the background are applied to the characters, as well as them having proper shadows and reflections on the lockers and floor. This makes them, again, blend better.

Also, a final point I want to make (the other two replies are also from me, just with thoughts that came at different times). KyoAni's line art is not crisp enough -especially around the edges- to make it look out of place with blurry backgrounds. This is because KyoAni does make an effort of blending them together. Pic related is from the making of Tamako Market. The top image is how it looks before filters and the bottom is after filters. You can see that in the before picture the lines are crisp and clash with the background (around the scarf, for example), while after the filters they do blend better and don't look as sharp against the bg. You stopped replying so I'm guessing you got what I'm saying and understood that you were just seeing what you wanted to see to support your argument. And I'm not saying this in a smug way, I'm just passionate about these things so I'm glad that this discussion ended in agreement. It's a good thing being able to know when you were wrong and correct yourself, so keep it up, you're cool.

Aoki Ume, Kobayashi Jin and even Nakamura Hikaru all came as guests to their respective series' web radio and talked loads of stuff about the adaptating process, each of them saying how Shinbo asks even for the smallest details that aren't present in the original work (like Chika on Hidamari).
