I didn't read the LNs, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong:
It felt like all of the dystopian sci-fi and social commentary was just superficial window dressing for a same-ish plot. I didn't notice any shout-outs to Philip K. Dick (outside of the title of one episode, but that was a Wikipedia-tier reference) or anything reminiscent of Tom Stoppard. What I did see was the obligatory ultraman joke and a bunch of shounen memes.
The only real underlying motif I picked up on was "the history of Japanese pornography according to 2ch". Billy walking in and telling Tanukichi that he got him mad now wouldn't have seemed out of place.

Too much stupity and lack of communication from the MCs.
There is always some suspension of belief in animes, but the MCs were too much. Simply imbecile. I really hate to say this but I think you took the show way too seriously. First and foremost it was a comedy, you can say it wasn't funny, but that doesn't mean that isn't what it tried to do.

In fairness to Haganai, I originally thought the author would end it with nobody winning and them just being friends at a club scene. That's apparently what he thought too. He just wrote too much romance and he had to get it out fo the way before returning to the original ending he'd envisioned, which is a sign of how much of a cuck he is that he can't even adapt to his own story.

Yukimura then immediately mouth-raped Kodaka and confessed to him, and he said yes because he realized that, out of all the girls, Yukimura had been pursuing him from day 1 and done everything she could to win him over.
They both resign from the Neighbor's Club because the author needed DRAMABOMB so he could get them back in with the Neighbor's Club as friends since they couldn't be friends with all the girls Kodaka rejected.
Kodaka starts dating her over the course of their last year in high school while not ever once setting foot in the Neighbor's Club. They go on fun dates, get parental approval, and dress cute, but he still feels like he wants to go back to the club and he gets depressed. Finally, the week before Christmas, Yukimura gives him an ultimatum: Go on a Christmas date with her and take her virginity, or break up with her and go to the Neighbor's Club Christmas party.
And that's where the series ends. Kodaka breaks up with Yukimura at the Christmas Party, they all shout "Normalfags REEEEEEEEE" and play dark hot pot again.
