It's too meta for its own good. Call me a retard, but there were too many alternate worlds, too many interpretations about whether something was real or just symbolic of something else, and too much of what seemed like filler or unnecessary scenes.
All of that combined to make something that certainly was not fun to read, even if it was interesting and intricate/complex.
Higurashi obviously has a similar structure and shares some themes and plot elements, but also manages to pull it all off in an interesting way and without getting lost up its own ass.

Then it translates into the real layer with Battler flirting with Sayo-Beatrice. Right under the fresh bodies of his family, whose deaths were directly provoked by Sayo. Something I've been wondering. Does anyone remember whether the game explicitly stated that there was only one culprit? In the first four episodes I mean. Solving the game by the end of episode four is the dream after all. And I feel like we never had a chance.
I remember people denying Shkanontrice well into episode six, mostly because they didn't like what it meant for those characters characterizations. They (we) preferred more complex scenarios where different characters committed murder for varying reasons in each episode. And it made everything way too complicated.
I wonder if we could have solved it much faster if this rule was spelled out. We'd have been focusing less on why everybody died, and instead focused on how anyone could have possibly done this.
It wouldn't surprise me if it was in fact stated somewhere, but I suspect it wasn't. (Not even as one of Knox's?) I think it was left as an unspoken law of mystery novels, and no one really noticed that we were playing by those rules.
Point being, I think if I were ever to recommend Umineko to a friendif I had anyI would state for the record that Beatrice is one person who does all the killings herself, note that the game is solvable by episode four, and see if they have better luck.
