3rd year Jap degree here. I'm inclined to agree. For all the grammar and vocab you learn, formal education does little to actually acclimate you to actual use of the language. If anything, anime helped me get used to the flow and basic nuances of the language. Formal education is best for solidifying concepts and things you've picked up along the way outside the classroom.
