The Macross 30 that I'm talking about is the concert, which had a storyline that Kawamori was involved in. All the concerts are basically a dream that Sheryl was having while in coma, the concert ends with Alto's voice saying that he's coming home and Sheryl looking like she's going to wake up.
But it that wasn't enough, Kawamori has already stated in an interview after the release of the second movie Blu Ray that Alto returns and Sheryl wakes up.

Movies good in its own right just because its gorgeous and the new song is amazing.
That said, as a standalone, the four and a half hours of the two movies could never match the 25 episodes of the series. Although it cuts out all of the unnecessary bits, it does lack a lot of the development that the series enjoyed. Michel doesn't die for some reason, too, and there's like six different times where they tease a character death but say fuck it. The series as a whole was definitely better, and if you like Sheryl, there's a complete role reversal of her in the movies where she plays the damsel in distress, until the very end. Quite sad really.
