Taking the emotional strength of a cloned hybrid who is physically 14 but younger mentally (seven?) like Rei who was nurtured and raised in a completely environment and comparing that to regular children (I admit Asuka and Shinji are abnormal but not quite like Rei) is pretty strange. Yes, Rei developed feelings and fears over time but all of that was a result of the possibility of being used and then abandoned by the only person who cared about her. She didn't experience the trauma that Asuka and Shinji did. She wasn't able to interact with other human beings in the same way either.
It seems to me that it was pretty easy for Rei to take off the shackles that were binding her to Gendo and go off on her own in order to make her own decisions. That would be pretty easy for a child with fewer hang ups, emotional baggage, and a traumatic past to do.
For Asuka on the other hand who hand to interact with more people, was raised in a different environment, witnessed the death of her mother, and had to cling to numerous people and things for support - all that eventually let her down at such a young age, I would never expect someone like Asuka exude such strength anyway. I can absolutely see why you would look at it that way, especially with the way that EVA02 reacted when it was in the lake and being bombarded.
However, I interpreted the events differently. Asuka was in EVA02 saying over and over again that she didn't want to die and when she finally screamed it out for the final time it was as if EVA02 was reacting to her wish to live. I recall that her sync ratio was going down steadily until it would no longer work, the more the realized that other people were superior to her and that she could be replaced. If she could be replaced, there was no point to her living, so it would make sense that she wanted to die at that point since the EVA did not work. It was unfortunate that Asuka did not realize that she was putting herself in a worse situation because of her long held beliefs.
When she finally got herself out of that deadly rut and proclaimed that she wanted to live, the EVA started to function again and her mother revealed herself to her.
That's just my interpretation though. I could be entirely wrong and it really could have been BAM, EVA02 solves everything for Asuka in an instant.
