I decided to go look up some masterpieces just to see which studio they were by. The anime were Serial Experiments Lain, Simoun, and Revolutionary Girl Utena, and the studios were Triangle Staff, J.C.Staff, and Studio Deen.

Personally I find Lucky Star and K-on masterpieces of their respective genres too, but really if you say Disappearance wasn't a masterpiece, well, you're just trying too hard to be contrarian. Or you only know KyoAni as "that studio everyone worships even though I've never seen them put out a good show". Yeah, if you've been here since only 2013 or something that might be understandable.
However if you were here in its heyday (06-11) you knew damn well KyoAni was the best studio and to say otherwise was the territory of only idiots and trolls. SHAFT only grew into a competitor by 2011 after Monogatari and Madoka made it look like they were on track to handily overtaking KyoAni. Which didn't happen, although KyoAni also fell by the wayside too (besides fucking Free) so oh well. Neither "won" and the industry has no clear head-and-shoulders leader at the moment because subsequent megahits have alternated around (WIT, Sunrise, lolPierrot). But I still like SHAFT more because Hidamari is my all-time favorite show and I think I've liked damn near every show they've made the past decade besides Dance in the Vampire Bund.
