Ah well. I'm curious to know what you somewhat disliked about Ascension (I'm assuming it's Kokou no Hito)
Personally, I loved very much all of them. Kokou no Hito was had good art and, in my opinion, did the best representation of an autist. Starting off as your typical shonen sport story, with rivals, the protagonist being somehow so good without knowing he's good at it. Then BAM, it hits you out of nowhere.
Doremi is more something I watched a few years ago and loved it. I mean, it's childish as fuck, lacks somewhat substance overall, drags a lot concerning its plot, but all of the characters are so vibrant and fun that I felt like a child again. It was such an interesting feeling.
As for Albator, it was one of the very first anime I've ever watched. Hell, Capitaine Albator is a cultural icon and everyone knows who he is, even people who don't even know what anime is. And that music, argh, so good.

5cm/s is probably a love or hate it movie imo. It's purposefully boring with the intent of making you relate to the characters.
C&C, Wario Land, Mario Party 2 MGS and Freelancer are also nostalgic loves for me. Though I still find them amazing now that I'm older. Mario Party 2 was such a blast to play with friends. Wario Land 3 is damn good (the entire series is good but 3 is just my favorite) and I'm not entirely sure what might be disliked about it.
C&C is cheesy fun. The entire series is such a blast.
Freelancer, at its height was almost half of WoW. The endless amounts of mods, servers, pvps, clans, backstabs, alliances was insane. Mixed in with people making their own ships, fanfic lore for their clan and it was great.
MGS is, imo, a flawed masterpiece. With the MGSV, I'm unsure if it breaks that mold but meh.

It starts off completely cliche, like basically any sport shonen and thenthe teacher diesand it feels like a sucker punch out of nowhere with the story basically going ''life isn't a fucking shonen'' and the tone changes completely.
It even has this ''future villain who watches the contest from afar while remarking that he has new competition''. That's cliche as fuck and it's later brought up that he just randomly died while doing a stunt. I'm not sure or not whether the author just changed his mind or if it was the plan all along, to bait and switch the reader with shonen cliche.

Different person here, Gunbuster is filled with silly writing and the first two episodes aren't that great, but everything that follows is just pure perfect entertainment. Sure, it's cliched as hell but when you have the right people doing it, the cliches just work in the shows favor and they go all out with it. Crazy intergalactic battles, great animation, great mech design, great soundtrack, the best use of "Let's use THAT" ever and one of the strongest endings I've seen. Just thinking about Gunbuster fills my body with excitement.

Ouran is very much loved everywhere but I don't think anyone really talks about it because it's an 'old' show. Plus it has a good dub so everyone who's a pleb has watched it. It's funny but I wouldn't call it great. There's a few plot holes and unresolved things like how the group will break up if Haruhi picks someone and the original ending doesn't really tie up anything and comes off as meh. Though the manga after that point is also meh, so meh.
Soul Eater is just completely meh to me. I dropped it in the middle where everyone is heading towards the bag thing and it was just boring. The fights were just not interesting. Alright animated but not really good imo. And I've been told that after that part, it goes to shit.

Personally, I enjoyed the buildup of the first three episodes to Noriko getting in the Gunbuster in episode four and wrecking with it. Really satisfying payoff. I thought the character interactions kept it interesting enough when there wasn't any action going on. Last two episodes wrap it up nicely and it has a good ending, which is something even a lot of other good anime falls down on. Not perfect, but I like it.

Gunbuster, to me, is praised and disliked for basically the same reason. It has cool moments and ideas stuck in an OVA. 'It's good for an OVA'' is basically the entirety of the praise. It's like having a small filet mignion. Sure, the small parts are good and tasty but it's not really much more than just that.
It really feels as though someone went ''that's a good idea, and that's good too'' and just added it together without any bones.
For example, wouldn't it be cool if coachy came into the earth meeting, near the end of his energy to give the one thing no one has thought of to win the war when all hope is lost? Fuck yeah! That's a great moment and idea. But the plan coachy comes out is just boring and predictable.
Or like how the main girl meets up with a boy, then he just randomly dies and she starts to have ptsd. That's a great idea, but then she somewhat gets over it and nothing much is known about the war or the soldiers.
Gunbuster is just a bunch of cool ideas strapped together into an OVA.

Ouran is just really good at being a fun comedy, which also has some degree of depth. Way too many comedy shows feel the need to force in deep and dark drama about the characters and their backstories, which just serves to completely interrupt what good things they had going. Ouran does have darker backstories for its characters, which does give them depth, but it tells them through touching, nice scenes that it works around the comedy, instead of just forcing them in through entire arcs of melodrama. Besides that, the characters are all likeable, their dynamics are all hilarious, most of the gags never fail to get me, the whole classy, refined aesthetic is really pleasing for me, it's just good at what it does.
Or maybe I'm just bias bc it was the first comedy anime I ever saw.
