A lot of the things some people have against that studio is done by almost every other anime studio out there, but worse.
KyoAni has a good track record and put out good animes on a regular basis. Wich cannot be said for the likes of JC Staff, A-1 Pictures, Madhouse and others.

There isn't a single KyoAni show or movie better than any of these in terms of overall scope and lasting impression, so it doesn't even matter if I haven't watched some meme studio. The fact that some unknown vocal percentage of /a/ praises it so much is even more reason to turn me off from their shows. Now, I have watched a few episodes of some KyoAni anime here and there over the years, and while the animation was overall very well done and pleasing, substance was nowhere to be found, so I promptly dropped them.

But they did ? Euphonium and Hyouka were top tier. Amaburi,Tamako, Phantom World and Chuu2 were less remarkable but still good as well.

The recent situation is absurdly weird, with Kyoani's latest anime sucking and DEEN's last two works being consistently better than that.
It's like I'm bizzarro world, where the Disney of TV Anime turns out to be a failure, and the studio everyone only mentions as a parody of what a studio should be like actually bringing out the best anime in the season.

That said, Konosuba was unexpectedly good, it's like they found the last skilled guys left at DEEN and put them on it as some sort of last resort, and the result was glorious.

The characters were the biggest problem in phantom world, and they all sucked. For a show that would bother to have an episodic format focusing on single characters, they sure didn't do a good job of actually fleshing them out. They introduce them, then let that be that for the most part.

Kyoani has the sexiest girls and excellent overall animation, but they are too safe. Both story wise and fanservice wise.
I felt chuu2 second season suffered badly by the neutered relationship between Rika and Yuuta. In other anime of theirs I felt the same feeling of vauge disappointment. Like I enjoyed the show but it didn't seem to connect anywhere. A sort of storyline blueballs, where there was no catharsis.
They are a good studio but I don't expect greatness out of them. They would be a bad choice for adapting something with actual depth because they can't create the level of dramatic tension or atmosphere to carry it. They are so CLOSE, but back off right at the precipice.

And as you said they were heavily justified by the story and most importantly not overplayed with quirky autistic shit, because the characters behave fairly normally on screen (except Haruhi sometimes but she gets called out for it so it doesn't break the immersion)

I felt the same way watching other anime of theirs. Their anime lack a certain ineffable something. Their Key game adaptations and Nichijou were very good, but other shows... Amaburi had a cast worthy of classic comedies like Ranma and yet fell flat. Kyokai was dramatic and had good characters but somehow didn't seal the deal.
They've made many good anime, and Haruhi, Lucky Star and Kanon show they have the ability to make better anime, but lately I feel most of their shows are lightweight and forgettable.
